Motorists travelling towards Durban on the N3 this weekend are being urged to prepare for increased traffic volumes and to drive with caution, as traffic is expected to build ahead of the Durban July on Saturday, 4 July 2026.

The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) has warned that the key route will come under sustained pressure from Friday, 3 July 2026, as holidaymakers, racegoers and freight traffic converge on KwaZulu-Natal.

According to the RTMC, coordinated deployments have already been activated along the route. Traffic officials from Gauteng, Mpumalanga, the Free State and KwaZulu-Natal will work alongside N3TC, Immigration officers from Home Affairs, and other stakeholders to help maintain traffic flow and limit disruptions.

Despite the increased law enforcement presence, the RTMC has cautioned that the nature of the weekend may introduce added road safety risks, particularly as large volumes of mixed traffic move along the corridor.

“The weekend is characterised by a joyful vibe, and it is most likely that irresponsible behaviour on the road can occur. The N3 experiences high traffic volumes which include freight, sedans, SUVs, 4×4 vehicles. More traffic is expected, which will cause higher traffic density.”

The RTMC further noted that the Durban July coincides with the winter school holidays.

As a result, the route is expected to carry additional private vehicles, as families make use of what may be one of the final opportunities for a short break before schools reopen.

“The RTMC believes every member deployed has a responsibility and an obligation to execute their law enforcement mandates professionally, impartially and with integrity,” stressed the RTMC.

Against this backdrop, motorists are being urged to comply with all road traffic regulations and remain patient when approaching known pressure points on the N3.

In particular, construction activity between Tugela River and Tugela Plaza, as well as between Harrismith and Warden, is expected to slow traffic.

Ongoing roadworks between Pietermaritzburg and Durban are also likely to contribute to congestion, especially during peak travel periods.

“Please approach these areas with caution. Motorists are further advised to be on high alert for dangerous walking by pedestrians on this stretch of the road. There are high fatal incidents of pedestrian jaywalking. Strong winds between Hilton and Pietermaritzburg are affecting commercial drivers, including low levels of visibility due to fog,” added the Road Traffic Management Corporation.

In addition to congestion and construction-related delays, authorities have also raised concerns about unlawful and dangerous driving practices during high-volume travel periods.

Motorists are therefore being cautioned against making illegal U-turns, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and operating vehicles without valid driving licences.

“Authorities are aware of infringement of number plate removal with clear intention to ensure inaccurate identification of the vehicle to avoid speed cameras on the N3; law enforcement officers will not hesitate to act against anyone who conducts themselves in an unlawful manner,” concluded the RTMC.

The weekend’s traffic conditions will depend not only on enforcement visibility, but also on the conduct of motorists using the route. While authorities have confirmed a strong operational presence along the N3, driver behaviour remains one of the key factors in determining road safety outcomes during the busy travel period.

As the corridor absorbs increased volumes over a condensed period, motorists are encouraged to remain alert, adjust their speed to the conditions, allow for longer travel times, and follow the rules of the road.
