Although authorities initially released limited details, the KZN SAPS confirmed that the arrests took place while the individuals were actively purifying gold-bearing materials at a farm in Vryheid.

During the raid, officers seized 32 blasting cartridges, five detonators, orange detonating cord, two 9mm Canik pistols with 44 rounds of ammunition, and an array of mining equipment including generators, jackhammers, hammers, drill bits, spades, picks, and ropes.

As a result, the suspects now face serious charges of unlawful possession of explosives, illegal mining, and contravention of the Immigration Act.

Many of those arrested are understood to be undocumented foreign nationals, a trend that has surfaced repeatedly in illegal mining operations across the country.

The arrests fall under Operation Vala Umgodi, South Africa’s national drive to curb illegal mining by targeting unregulated mining sites, disrupting criminal networks, and addressing the wider safety, environmental and law-enforcement risks linked to illicit extraction.

The operation brings together police, mining authorities and other stakeholders in an effort to restore control in areas where illegal mining has taken root.

In this case, the scale of the seizure points to more than opportunistic activity. The recovery of explosives, firearms, ammunition and industrial-grade mining equipment suggests a structured operation with access to dangerous materials and a working supply chain.

As the matter continues before the Vryheid Magistrates Court, attention will now turn to both the legal outcome and what the arrests reveal about illegal mining activity in Northern KwaZulu-Natal.
