Shocked bystanders looked on as a house was engulfed in flames along Drakensberg Drive in Barry Hertzog Park on Thursday afternoon, 21 May 2026, with residents, a local traffic officer and firefighters all converging on the scene in an effort to bring the blaze under control.
The fire broke out shortly after 14:00, prompting a local resident to raise the alarm and contact emergency services after noticing that the flames had taken hold.

As the situation escalated, nearby residents rushed to assist while emergency teams made their way to the property.
According to a man at the scene, his friend had called for help after discovering the fire.
“My friend lives here, and he had apparently stepped out for a few minutes and came home to this,” said the man, who had attempted to help quell the flames.
As the response intensified, emergency personnel worked to contain the fire while securing the surrounding area.
At this stage, the cause of the blaze has not yet been determined.

Furthermore, a police officer at the scene confirmed that a formal investigation would only begin once the fire had been fully extinguished and the property was safe to assess. He further added that no injuries had been reported at the scene.
Motorists travelling along Drakensberg Drive were urged to proceed with caution as emergency operations continued in the area. The presence of fire and rescue teams resulted in traffic disruptions while crews worked to bring the situation under control.
With the blaze contained, attention will now turn to the investigation into the cause of the fire.
