KwaZulu-Natal is preparing for two days of unsettled and potentially disruptive weather, with provincial disaster management structures placed on heightened alert as severe thunderstorms are forecast to affect large parts of the province.

This follows the South African Weather Service (SAWS) issuing an Orange Level 6 Warning alongside a Level 4 Yellow Warning, with hazardous conditions expected from Tuesday, 5 May 2026, through to Wednesday night, 6 May 2026.

SAWS has attributed the developing weather pattern to a cold front advancing over the eastern parts of KwaZulu-Natal, coupled with a Cut-Off Low Pressure System positioned over the central interior of South Africa from Tuesday.

The interaction of these systems is expected to trigger widespread showers and thundershowers across multiple districts, with conditions likely to deteriorate rapidly in affected areas.

The weather service has further cautioned that the system carries the potential for severe thunderstorms accompanied by damaging winds, hail, and heavy downpours.

Consequently, the risk of localised flooding and infrastructure disruption remains elevated, particularly across the province’s south-eastern and north-eastern regions.

“Models are indicating rainfall accumulation in excess of 80mm which will increase the likelihood of flash floods in these areas,” SAWS said in a statement.

Based on this forecast, SAWS issued an Orange Level 6 Warning for Severe Thunderstorms for Hlabisa, Hluhluwe, Jozini, Mtubatuba, Nongoma, Ray Nkonyeni, Umdoni, Umhlabuyalingana, uMhlathuze, UMuziwabantu, Umzumbe, and Pongola.

In addition, a Yellow Level 4 Warning for Severe Thunderstorms has been issued for Vryheid, Indaka, Ladysmith, Dannhauser, Underberg, eDumbe, Utrecht, and Dundee, as well as eThekwini.

Broader areas under surveillance include Greater Kokstad, Impendle, Ingwe, Estcourt, KwaDukuza, Mooi River, Msinga, Ndwedwe, and Newcastle.

Nkandla, Nquthu, Okhahlamba, Richmond, and the Msunduzi area are also expected to experience storm-related impacts under the Level 4 warning, with conditions anticipated to vary in intensity across these regions over the two-day period.

Furthermore, authorities have warned that the affected areas face an increased risk of flooding impacting roads, bridges, and both formal and informal settlements.

Additionally, SAWS highlighted further hazards, including hail-related damage to infrastructure, dangerous fast-flowing water in rivers and low-lying crossings, widespread travel disruptions due to blocked routes, and lightning-related fire incidents.

These conditions, the service noted, may escalate rapidly, affecting both mobility and public safety.

In response to the forecast, KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi, confirmed that provincial disaster management structures have been fully activated and placed on standby.

“The Provincial Disaster Management Centre (PDMC) has activated an emergency Joint Operations Centre (JOC), engaging district disaster management leadership from Zululand, uMkhanyakude, King Cetshwayo and Ugu, to ensure coordinated preparedness and response measures are immediately implemented,” MEC Buthelezi said.

With rainfall exceeding 80mm expected in parts of the province, authorities have cautioned that the likelihood of flash flooding remains significantly elevated, alongside risks of damaging winds, hail, lightning incidents, and possible infrastructure damage.

MEC Buthelezi indicated that operational efforts are now focused on high-risk communities and essential transport infrastructure.

“This significantly increases the risk of flash flooding, damaging winds, hail, lightning-related incidents and infrastructure damage,” he said.

He further noted that particular attention is being directed towards communities located in low-lying areas and those situated near rivers and streams, where the potential for rapid flooding is highest.

At the same time, critical transport corridors are under active monitoring.

“Major transport routes, including the N2 and N3 corridors, are being closely monitored for potential flooding, debris and travel disruptions,” he said.

KZN COGTA has issued a series of precautionary measures urging residents and motorists to exercise caution throughout the weather system:

  • Motorists are urged to avoid travel where possible, reduce speed in poor visibility, and never attempt to drive through flooded roads or bridges.
  • Residents in low-lying areas and near rivers should remain alert and avoid crossing swollen streams or fast-flowing water.
  • The public is advised to stay indoors where possible, avoid sheltering under trees, stay away from metal objects during thunderstorms, and move to higher ground if threatened by floodwaters.

“The Provincial Joint Operations Centre will remain active for the duration of this weather system, which is expected to continue until Wednesday night,” MEC Buthelezi concluded.

Against that backdrop, the situation places immediate pressure on households to act on warnings without delay, rather than waiting for visible escalation.

With key infrastructure corridors under watch and storm activity expected to persist into Wednesday night, the province’s most exposed communities are effectively operating within a narrow window where preparation and timing will determine the scale of impact.
