A man’s lifeless body was discovered outside a business in the Newcastle Central Business District (CBD) on Tuesday, 21 April 2026, prompting the Newcastle SAPS to open an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
The discovery was made on Sutherland Street, where the deceased was found lying outside a food retail establishment, his body positioned between tables and chairs on the pavement.
According to an official police source, authorities were alerted at approximately 07:00 after community members en route to work came across the body.
“The man was discovered by community members making their way to work in the area, and at this point of time, the exact cause of his death, and a possible motive, is still to be established,” explained the police official.
While the investigation remains in its early stages, officials at the scene indicated that the deceased may have been a member of Newcastle’s homeless community.
However, this remains unconfirmed, as no form of identification was found on him at the time. Authorities have emphasised that confirmation will depend on the formal identification of the deceased and the tracing of his next of kin.
As investigations get underway, police have urged members of the public to come forward with any information that may assist. Law enforcement has further assured that tip-offs can be provided anonymously.
As the case unfolds, the focus now shifts to establishing who the man was and how he came to be found in the heart of the CBD under such circumstances.

How can anyone come forth with any information of the deceased person if there isnt a photo of the persons face or identification? Atleast if a photo of the face was taken we could maybe identify the person or hand the info that we know of the person if the person is known by us
The article makes it seems as though this hasn’t happend before. Although this may not be a common occurrence it certainly is something that happens at random due to the number of homeless people which is increasing.
