A 23-year-old suspect is expected to appear before the Ladysmith Magistrate Court shortly, facing charges related to the assault and death of a four-year-old child in Ladysmith.
In a formal briefing regarding the case, police spokesperson Warrant Officer Khan explained to Newcastillian News that the distressing incident first came to light on 26 March 2026.

The matter was initiated when Ladysmith Regional Hospital contacted the Ladysmith SAPS to report that a young child, who had been admitted for emergency medical intervention, had sadly passed away.
Initial reports suggested that the child had been rushed to the hospital after being discovered in a bath of water. However, despite the efforts of medical staff, she later succumbed to her injuries, prompting a closer examination of the circumstances surrounding her admission.
Warrant Officer Khan further detailed that when Ladysmith Visible Policing Officers arrived at the medical facility, they were shown the body of the young girl, who has since been identified as Sbongokuhle Lethokuhle Ndlovu.
“The child had sustained several bruises consistent with that of an assault,” noted Warrant Officer Khan, who confirmed that, as a result of these findings, Ladysmith detectives immediately opened a murder investigation.
Furthermore, while no arrests were made in the immediate aftermath of the tragedy, the 23-year-old suspect was successfully taken into custody in early April 2026.
However, the police have yet to release the identity of the individual or a definitive motive for the crime, as neither was available at the time of publication.
As the legal process takes its course, the focus remains firmly on pursuing justice for young Sbongokuhle Lethokuhle Ndlovu. Anyone with any information that could assist in the matter, is encouraged to contact the SAPS.
While the arrest marks a milestone in the investigation, the upcoming court appearance is expected to provide much-needed clarity on the events that led to this senseless loss of life.
