Four men were executed in what police believe was a coordinated ambush in Ezakheni, just outside Ladysmith, on Monday morning, 6 April 2026, bringing a violent close to the Easter weekend.

The attack unfolded in D Section, where the victims, aged between 43 and 63, were travelling in a Nissan Almera.

As confirmed by SAPS Spokesperson, Warrant Officer Basheer Khan, according to initial findings, their vehicle was allegedly intercepted by an undisclosed number of assailants, travelling in two vehicles.

As per a police source, the suspects used VW Polos for their crimes, but this is still to be officially confirmed as witness statements are currently being gathered.

As gunfire erupted, the Nissan came under sustained attack. In response, the driver attempted to evade the assault. However, amid the chaos, he lost control of the vehicle, veering off the road and into a nearby veld.

Once the vehicle came to a standstill, three of the occupants managed to climb out, presumably in an effort to flee on foot, while the fourth occupant was allegedly too injured to climb out of the vehicle.

It is unclear at this point which of the victims climbed out of the car, and which one was too injured to attempt to escape the attack.  However, rather than disengaging, the gunmen reportedly brought their vehicles to a halt, exited, and advanced on the victims.

They then opened fire again at close range, fatally wounding all the men at the scene before fleeing.

Taken together, the sequence of events, from the initial interception to the apparent pursuit, suggests a deliberate and methodical attack. Consequently, investigators are examining the possibility that the victims were specifically targeted, although authorities have yet to establish a clear motive.

Confirming the circumstances, Warrant Officer Basheer said, “The motive for the killing is unknown at this stage, and Ezakheni Detectives are investigating four counts of murder. Also, the deceased have not yet been identified.”

Meanwhile, the circumstances of the killings have left a sense of unease in Ezakheni, with the manner in which the attack unfolded raising broader questions about who the victims were and why they were targeted.

At the same time, police have called on members of the public to assist with any information that may prove invaluable, as efforts remain focused on identifying the deceased, tracing those responsible, and establishing a clear motive.
