For many South African parents, one question comes up repeatedly when planning for a child’s future: how much more does private schooling really cost than fee-paying public schooling over the full journey from Grade 1 to Grade 12? It is an important question, but also one that is often answered too broadly.

Unfortunately, there is no single national figure that can settle the issue, because public-school fees are not fixed nationally.

The Department of Basic Education states that public-school fees are determined at school level, and that parents who cannot afford them may apply for partial or full exemption through the School Governing Body.

In other words, the cost of fee-paying public education varies from school to school, just as private-school fees vary widely from one institution to another.

To give readers a grounded picture rather than a sweeping claim, this comparison uses published 2026 fee schedules from selected schools as benchmarks.

On the fee-paying public side, the model used here is Edenglen Primary for Grades 1 to 7 and Rand Park High School for Grades 8 to 12. Edenglen Primary lists its 2026 annual school fee at R29,725 per learner for Grades 1 to 7 and identifies itself as a Quintile 5 fee-paying school.

Rand Park High lists its 2026 fees at R62,500 for Grade 8 and new learners, and R60,500 for Grades 9 to 12 existing learners.

Using those published figures, the total fee-paying public school journey from Grade 1 to Grade 12 comes to roughly R512,575 in school fees alone.

That public benchmark matters because it shows that fee-paying public education is not “cheap” in absolute terms when spread across a full school career. Even before adding uniforms, transport, stationery, sport, camps or devices, a family already spends just over half a million rand in school fees by the time a child completes matric.

That figure also reflects only the schools used in this comparison, not every fee-paying public school in the country, but it does provide a realistic basis for measuring the private-school gap.

Against that benchmark, the first private-school example is Ridgeway College.

Its published 2026 fee structure lists monthly school fees of R4,500 for Grades 1 to 3, R5,110 for Grades 4 to 5, R5,110 for Grades 6 to 7, R5,900 for Grade 8, R6,350 for Grade 9 and R6,625 for Grades 10 to 12, all payable over 12 months.

On tuition alone, that produces a full Grade 1 to Grade 12 total of about R792,780.

Compared with the fee-paying public benchmark of R512,575, that is roughly R280,205 more over the school career. Ridgeway’s schedule also lists separate entrance fees, annual re-enrolment fees and certain exam fees, which means a family’s total outlay can rise beyond the tuition-only figure.

A second example, Academy Private School, comes in higher.

Its 2026 schedule lists Grade 1 at R54,000 a year, Grades 2 to 6 at R64,800 a year, Grades 7 to 9 at R81,924 a year, Grades 10 to 11 at R96,600 a year, and Grade 12 at R96,600.

Using those published tuition figures from Grade 1 through Grade 12 produces a total of R913,572. That places Academy about R400,997 above the fee-paying public benchmark used in this article.

Its published schedule also lists a once-off acceptance or registration fee of R3,900 for Grades 1 to 12, a non-refundable annual development levy of R1,500 from a pupil’s second and each subsequent year of enrolment, and additional textbook, eTextbook and Chromebook-related requirements for high school learners.

The International School of South Africa presents a sharper jump again.

Its 2026 tuition schedule lists Grade 1 at R37,998, Grade 2 at R39,999, Grade 3 at R42,000, Grade 4 at R76,821, Grade 5 at R80,829, Grade 6 at R91,551, Form 1 at R104,619, Form 2 at R114,078, Form 3 at R124,803, Grade 10 IEB at R135,483 and Grades 11 and 12 IEB at R140,163 each.

Those published fees add up to R1,128,507 across the Grade 1 to Grade 12 journey, placing the total about R615,932 above the fee-paying public benchmark. ISSA also charges examination fees separately and excludes a range of additional costs from its tuition, including stationery, workbooks, extra subject materials, outings, camps and sports trips.

At the upper end of the scale in this comparison is Dainfern College. Its 2026 fee structure lists annual tuition of R118,400 for Grade 1, rising steadily through the grades to R189,770 for Grade 12. Calculated from the published Grade 1 to Grade 12 schedule, the tuition total comes to R1,841,010.

That is roughly R1,328,435 more than the fee-paying public benchmark used here.

Dainfern also publishes separate application and entrance costs, including a R500 application fee and entrance fees of R25,000 for Grades 0 to 7 and R30,000 for Grades 8 to 12 for new entrants, while also noting an optional debenture structure. In other words, its tuition figure alone already sits far above the public-school benchmark before entry costs are even considered.

Taken together, these published 2026 examples show just how wide the gap can become over a child’s full schooling career. Using the benchmark in this article, fee-paying public schooling from Grade 1 to Grade 12 comes to about R512,575.

The private-school examples then range from roughly R792,780 at Ridgeway College to R913,572 at Academy Private School, R1,128,507 at ISSA and R1,841,010 at Dainfern College. Put differently, the private-school premium in these examples ranges from about R280,205 to well over R1.3 million, depending on the school chosen and before many additional charges are fully brought into account.

That said, these figures should be read for what they are: a published-fee comparison built on selected 2026 school schedules, not a universal national average.

Some fee-paying public schools will come in below the public benchmark used here, while others may sit higher. The same applies on the private side, where there are more affordable independent schools and significantly more expensive premium options.

Costs such as uniforms, stationery, transport, digital devices, sport tours, boarding, extra lessons, examination fees, levies and deposits can also materially shift the final amount a family pays over 12 years.

What this comparison does show, clearly, is that the difference between fee-paying public and private schooling in South Africa is not marginal over time.

Even using a realistic fee-paying public benchmark rather than a no-fee school, the gap remains substantial. For parents planning ahead from primary school through matric, the published 2026 numbers suggest that the decision between the two routes can mean anything from several hundred thousand rand extra to more than a million rand extra across a child’s school career.
