SAWS Thunderstorm Warning Issued for Numerous KZN Towns

SAWS thunderstorm warning KZN

Residents across KwaZulu-Natal have been urged to prepare for severe thunderstorms after the South African Weather Service (SAWS) confirmed that unstable weather conditions are expected to affect multiple towns across the province on Monday, 23 February 2026.

While slightly cooler temperatures have recently provided relief from the summer heat, SAWS has forecast isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms developing throughout the day.

Several of these storms may intensify during the afternoon, increasing the likelihood of severe localised impacts.

According to SAWS, the anticipated storm activity may result in localised damage to infrastructure and informal settlements. Residents are advised to remain alert, particularly in areas prone to rapid weather changes or flooding.

Additionally, motorists have been cautioned to exercise additional care, as localised flooding could affect low-lying roads and bridges.

Slippery road surfaces and reduced visibility are expected to heighten the risk of minor motor vehicle accidents.

SAWS has further warned that damaging winds may accompany the stronger thunderstorms, potentially leading to flying debris and an increased risk of localised injuries. Significant volumes of small hail and intense lightning activity are also possible. Lightning strikes may trigger isolated fire incidents in directly affected areas.

The following towns and surrounding areas are expected to be impacted:

  • Newcastle
  • Ladysmith
  • Estcourt
  • Dannhauser
  • Underberg
  • Paulpietersburg
  • Utrecht
  • Dundee
  • Kokstad
  • Giants Castle
  • Pomeroy
  • Pietermaritzburg

Residents are encouraged to monitor official weather updates and plan accordingly. Those travelling, working outdoors, or attending public events should prepare for sudden weather shifts. Households may also need to secure loose items and remain mindful of potential flooding, wind damage, and lightning-related hazards.

Staying informed and taking precautionary measures will help reduce disruptions and support public safety during this period of unsettled weather.
