Communities across KwaZulu-Natal are being cautioned to prepare for severe weather conditions on Thursday, 19 February 2026, after the South African Weather Service (SAWS) issued a Level 2 Warning for thunderstorms expected to affect multiple towns across the province. The warning indicates that conditions could deteriorate from Thursday afternoon, particularly in northern regions.
According to SAWS, isolated and scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected over most of KwaZulu-Natal as the day progresses.

Forecasters, however, have highlighted that some systems may intensify, especially over the northern parts of the province.
In these areas, storms are likely to bring heavy downpours, damaging winds, excessive lightning and hail, collectively increasing the risk to communities and infrastructure. Residents and authorities are therefore being encouraged to prepare for potential disruptions in advance.
The forecast conditions carry several possible impacts. Damage to infrastructure and settlements remains a concern, particularly in areas already vulnerable to flooding. Localised flooding of roads and bridges is anticipated, while slippery surfaces and reduced visibility during heavy rainfall could contribute to minor vehicle accidents.
Unexpected storm surges or flash flooding may further disrupt travel and daily routines in affected towns.
Strong winds are also expected to pose a hazard. Therefore, SAWS has warned of possible injuries caused by flying debris, while large accumulations of hail in open areas could damage property, vehicles and crops. Precautionary measures such as securing loose outdoor items and moving vehicles under cover are therefore strongly recommended.
Towns expected to be impacted include:
- Newcastle
- Vryheid
- Ladysmith
- Indaka
- Dannhauser
- eDumbe
- Utrecht
- Estcourt
- Giants Castle
- Mooi River
- Msinga
- Sobabili
- Nkandla
- Nquthu
- Bergville
- Ulundi
Authorities in these areas are preparing contingency measures to respond quickly to any emergencies.
In light of the warning, SAWS has urged residents to exercise heightened caution. Travelling across bridges and roads in low-lying areas should be avoided where possible, as these may be prone to flooding and, in some cases, sinkhole formation following sustained heavy rainfall. Equally important is the need for residents to stay alert to changing conditions throughout the day and adjust travel or outdoor plans accordingly.
Members of the public are further advised to avoid outdoor activities during thunderstorms. Lightning, hail and flash flooding present serious safety risks that may result in injury or loss of life. Where possible, residents are encouraged to remain indoors and to move pets and vehicles to secure shelter.

Keeping a battery-powered radio or mobile device nearby to monitor official updates is also strongly recommended, particularly in rural areas where access to real-time information may be limited.
