A Newcastle, KZN mother has been sentenced to eight years’ imprisonment by the Madadeni Regional Court after being convicted of child neglect and physically assaulting her 13-year-old son, in a case that laid bare the vulnerability of two children living in unstable and abusive conditions.
The court heard that the matter surfaced on 4 August 2025, when the teenager left his home at about 8 pm and sought help from a neighbour.

According to Newcastle SAPS spokesperson Lizzy Arumugam, the child reported that his mother was intoxicated and had been threatening and physically assaulting him.
What began as a plea for immediate safety soon revealed a broader pattern of neglect. Arumugam said the boy told the neighbour that he and his sister were frequently unable to attend school because of their mother’s conduct and the instability at home. The neighbour alerted social workers, triggering an intervention that substantiated the child’s account.
“The child was taken to hospital, where the physical scars were noted, and the mother was then arrested.,” said Arumugam.
The case proceeded through months of investigation and preparation by the State before being finalised in the Madadeni Regional Court.
The mother was ultimately convicted and sentenced to eight years’ imprisonment for assaulting her son and neglecting her children — a sentence the court deemed proportionate to the seriousness of the offences.
Additionally, Child Welfare Newcastle’s head social worker, Faried Mia, said the outcome marks a decisive use of the criminal justice system in circumstances where matters are often resolved through counselling and protective measures alone.
“Cases such as these are often resolved in a way, where families are counseled and children are kept safe from future offences, but law is not used enough to address cases such as this, and the presiding magistrate has issued a strong message with this sentencing. I hope it acts as a deterrent for potential offenders.”
Beyond the courtroom, the case exposes the fragile line between private hardship and prosecutable harm.
Furthermore, the matter was not uncovered through a formal complaint, but through a child seeking refuge and a neighbour choosing to act — a reminder that intervention often begins at community level long before a matter reaches a regional court.

Its good that she has been sentenced. There is another mother who , disembowled her child and stabbed the other one. She has been sent for psyc evaluation at 4th Napier. Is the crime not the same? Is it not child abuse. Why are they going the mental route. Just because she said the devil made her do it, she is insane. Or is it because she is a woman of colour( not black) that she gets special treatment.
Her daughter that she almost killed is just 3 years old. She may never conceive or even go through puberty , because of the damage that was done to her abdomen by her mother. Please , Mr Aruguam u were also at the scene , be fair.
I agree with Prean lock these parents up they blame mental issues or alcohol drugs etc it’s shocking then out wondering the streets again for what ever reason getting councilling etc and making more babies it’s shocking my heart breaks for these children these parents must learn the hard way
