The Newcastle community is being urgently called upon to assist in a troubling case involving a young boy, estimated to be between four and five years old, who was discovered abandoned in the Newcastle Central Business District.

According to Newcastle Community Policing Forum (CPF) spokesperson Belinda Ellor, the child, who can only identify himself as Nkosi, was found wandering near Habiba Butchery on Voortrekker Street during November 2025.

Although he was located on the same day, no one has come forward to claim him, nor has any missing child report been filed. Consequently, authorities have now launched an urgent public appeal in an effort to trace his family.

“Authorities are now urgently seeking anyone to help identify the child, and locate any family members or individuals who may assist in identifying the child, or locating the family members,” Ellor said. She further explained that it remains unclear where the child originates from, adding that he may have travelled from another town with family before being left behind.

As officials continue their investigation, Ellor emphasised, “The child is approximately between four and five years old, and he has been placed in a place of safety, while officials search for his family.”

This, she noted, ensures the child’s immediate wellbeing while efforts continue to establish his identity and locate relatives.

Therefore, anyone with information that could assist in identifying Nkosi or tracing his family is urged to contact the following officials without delay:

  • Investigating Officer, Constable Archart from the SAPS FCS Unit: 068 828 9385
  • Newcastle SAPS: 079 500 1119
  • Newcastle Community Policing Forum’s Belinda Ellor: 071 404 3575

The case has raised serious concerns within the Newcastle community, prompting questions about how a young child could be left abandoned in such circumstances.

As authorities intensify their efforts to reunite Nkosi with his family, officials stress that public cooperation remains critical. Even the smallest piece of information could prove decisive in resolving the case.
