According to AccuWeather, Newcastle, Ladysmith and Vryheid can expect persistently hot and humid conditions over the coming days. However, these higher temperatures are set to be moderated by regular thunderstorms and rainfall.

At the same time, the South African Weather Service (SAWS) has cautioned that some of these storms could become severe.

In fact, SAWS has issued a Yellow Level 2 Warning for Severe Thunderstorms, which are expected to affect several towns across KwaZulu-Natal on Friday, 9 January 2026. As noted by the weather service, isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers are forecast.

Furthermore, some storms are expected to intensify over the central and western parts of KZN. As a result, these could be accompanied by heavy downpours, damaging winds, excessive lightning and hail, leading to various impacts.

The KZN communities expected to face the inclement weather include:

  • Newcastle
  • Ladysmith
  • Dannhauser
  • Underberg
  • Utrecht
  • Dundee
  • Greater Kokstad
  • Indaka
  • Estcourt
  • Impendle
  • Ingwe
  • Sobabili
  • Msinga
  • Mooi River
  • Giants Castle
  • Nkandla

Meanwhile, Pietermaritzburg, Nquthu and Umgeni are also among the towns and cities set to be impacted by the severe conditions.

Consequently, the severe conditions are likely to cause localised damage to infrastructure and settlements. Moreover, flooding is expected on low-lying and vulnerable roads and bridges. Jointly, strong winds could result in injuries from flying debris. Slippery road surfaces and reduced visibility are expected to increase the risk of minor vehicle collisions.

With this in mind, and with severe weather forecast, we now take a closer look at AccuWeather’s three-day outlook for Newcastle, Ladysmith and Vryheid:

While current forecasts provide a clear indication of the conditions expected over the coming days, residents are reminded that weather patterns can change rapidly. As a result, the public is strongly advised to monitor updates from reliable sources, including the South African Weather Service, AccuWeather and reputable media agencies, for the latest alerts and advisories. Staying informed will ensure communities are prepared should conditions worsen or warnings be upgraded.

In the meantime, residents are urged to exercise caution, particularly when travelling or engaging in outdoor activities. Motorists should remain alert on wet and slippery roads, while households are encouraged to secure loose objects that could become hazardous in strong winds. By remaining vigilant and taking basic safety precautions, communities can reduce potential risks and better protect themselves during periods of severe weather.
