The weekend has arrived, and for many South Africans, this weekend marks the official start of the festive holiday period, with thousands of people preparing to embark on holiday travel or spend time at home with loved ones.
However, with unpredictable weather continuing across KwaZulu-Natal, communities in Newcastle, Ladysmith and Vryheid are being urged to remain alert, as shifting conditions may affect travel plans and outdoor activities.

Looking ahead to the weekend’s weather conditions, AccuWeather’s forecast points to a temporary reprieve from the intense heatwave that recently swept through the province. Nevertheless, this moderation in temperatures is expected to coincide with persistent rainfall and an elevated risk of thunderstorms across all three towns.
Taking this into account, a closer look at this weekend’s expected weather patterns, as forecast by AccuWeather, is outlined below:
Friday, 19 December 2025:
Newcastle: A warm and pleasant day is expected, with temperatures forecast to reach 28°. The night-time temperatures are predicted to drop to 13°.
Ladysmith: A hot day is forecast, with temperatures expected to climb to 31°. The evening’s temperatures are expected to drop to 16°.
Vryheid: A pleasant day is expected, with temperatures forecast to reach 25°. The night-time temperatures are expected to drop to 12°.
Saturday, 20 December 2025:
Newcastle: A partly cloudy to sunny day is on the cards with temperatures expected to reach 29°. The evening’s temperatures are expected to fall to 18°, with a thunderstorm during the night..
Ladysmith: A warm day is forecast with temperatures set to reach 30°. The night-time temperature will drop to a cool 15°.
Vryheid: A warm but wet day with temperatures forecast to reach 27°, is on the cards, while rainfall and thunderstorms are expected throughout the day. The night-time temperatures are forecast to drop to 16°, and this will be accompanied by further rainfall and thunderstorms.
Sunday, 21 December 2025:
Newcastle: A cool day is predicted, with temperatures expected to reach 24°. The night’s temperatures are forecast to drop to 14°, and this is expected to be accompanied by rain.
Ladysmith: Another cloudy, but noticeably cooler day is forecast, with temperatures expected to reach 27°, which will be accompanied by an afternoon thunderstorm. The evening temperatures are forecast to drop to 17°, with thunderstorms expected during the night..
Vryheid: A cool day is on the cards, with temperatures expected to reach 23°, with rain and thunderstorms forecast for the afternoon. The night-time temperatures are forecast to drop to 15°, and this will be accompanied by light rainfall.
As traffic volumes increase on routes linking Newcastle, Ladysmith and Vryheid, motorists are urged to remain cautious, particularly as rainfall and thunderstorms may result in reduced visibility and hazardous driving conditions.

Wet road surfaces and sudden downpours, especially during afternoon and evening travel periods, are likely to increase risks, underscoring the need for heightened vigilance behind the wheel.
Similarly, holidaymakers travelling through or spending time in these areas are encouraged to remain weather-aware and adaptable.
