Jeep and Kia Vehicle Recalls Issued Over Safety Defects in South Africa

South African drivers are grappling with serious safety concerns as defects in key systems – airbags and anti-lock brakes – have compelled Jeep and Kia to launch recalls. In close collaboration with the National Consumer Commission (NCC), the manufacturers have responded decisively to address these potential hazards.

These recalls collectively impact nearly 19,000 vehicles, arising from formal notifications issued by Stellantis South Africa and Kia South Africa.

The affected vehicles are older models that, despite being sold years ago, remain widely in use on South African roads today.

One notable case is the Jeep recall, where Stellantis South Africa is calling in 323 Wrangler models sold nationwide between 2016 and 2018.

NCC spokesperson Phetho Ntaba described the issue succinctly: “According to the supplier, the dust inside the clockspring could compromise airbag circuit(s), causing illumination of the airbag warning light and or a non-deployment of the driver’s airbag during a crash.” Since the clockspring is a vital steering column component, it is particularly susceptible to failure in robust vehicles like the Wrangler, where dust and constant vibration are everyday realities.

By comparison, Kia South Africa’s recall stands out for its much broader scope, covering 18,600 vehicles acquired through authorised dealerships between 2009 and 2015.

The affected lineup includes:

  • Sportage (SL, KM)
  • Sorento (XM)
  • Optima (TF)
  • Cerato (TD)
  • Soul (AM)

Each of these models requires an essential ABS fuse replacement.

However, should the defect remain unresolved, the NCC cautions that it could disable the anti-lock braking system altogether, significantly prolonging stopping distances and, in some instances, leading to engine bay damage.

“Consumers who are affected by these recalls are urged to take these recalls seriously and arrange for the necessary inspections and repairs at any authorised dealership without delay to ensure their safety. The necessary repair work will be carried out at no cost to the consumer,” Ntaba stressed.

Given the gravity of these issues, owners affected by either recall are strongly encouraged to act promptly by contacting an authorised dealership. Full details are available in the official NCC notice here.

Be sure to contact your nearest dealership for further guidance on the matter.
