Dark storm clouds are rapidly building over north-western KwaZulu-Natal, with Newcastle, Ladysmith, Vryheid and surrounding municipalities preparing for a significant round of severe thunderstorms on Monday, 1 December 2025.
In response to the developing system, the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (KZNCoGTA) has activated heightened alert levels across all regional disaster management teams. The move follows a Yellow Level 2 severe thunderstorm warning issued by the South African Weather Service (SAWS).

According to SAWS, the approaching storm system is expected to produce heavy downpours, large hail, damaging winds and intense lightning, with the highest-risk areas including:
- Vryheid
- Ladysmith
- Dannhauser
- eDumbe
- eMadlangeni
- Endumeni
- Msinga
- Newcastle
- Nquthu
- uPhongolo
Furthermore, KZNCoGTA has reiterated the seriousness of the situation, noting: “Potential impacts include localised damage to infrastructure and settlements, flooding of roads and bridges, motor vehicle accidents caused by slippery conditions, and injuries resulting from flying debris and hail.”
Residents across the Amajuba, Zululand and uMzinyathi districts are urged to take immediate safety measures:
- Avoid low-lying roads, river crossings and flooded bridges
- Stay indoors and away from windows during thunderstorms
- Move vehicles, pets and loose outdoor items under shelter
- Relocate livestock to safer ground ahead of the storm
- Treat all lightning and hail forecasts as high-risk
Disaster management teams are monitoring the system in real time, while municipal emergency services remain on standby for possible flash flooding, power outages, fallen trees and structural damage.

With the Yellow Level 2 warning active for north-western KZN throughout Monday, authorities continue to emphasise the importance of staying informed and following safety guidance.
