KwaZulu-Natal residents are being urged to remain on high alert as Disaster Management Teams across the province ramp up preparations following a severe weather warning issued by the South African Weather Service (SAWS)

The alert comes as meteorologists forecast the arrival of a powerful cut-off low-pressure system expected to bring heavy rainfall, severe thunderstorms, and strong winds between Saturday, 15 November, and Monday, 17 November 2025, over the eastern parts of the country.

In its official statement, the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (KZN CoGTA) emphasised the seriousness of the situation, urging communities to prepare for potentially hazardous conditions. KZN CoGTA MEC, Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi, made a firm appeal for public vigilance, stating, “We have activated the Provincial Disaster Management Centre and all municipal disaster management units to monitor the situation closely. Our priority is to safeguard lives and minimise damage to property and infrastructure.”

Expanding on the risks, KZN CoGTA noted that cut-off low-pressure systems have historically resulted in significant destruction in the province.

“In April 2022, similar conditions led to catastrophic flooding that claimed over 400 lives and caused billions of rands in infrastructure damage. Previous instances have resulted in widespread destruction of homes, roads, and essential services, underscoring the seriousness of the current warning,” stated the department.

To ensure a coordinated response, MEC Buthelezi confirmed that all critical departments and agencies have been placed on standby. These include:

  • KZN Department of Transport.
  • KZN Department of Social Development.
  • Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) and Municipal Traffic Services.
  • State agencies such as SANRAL and Eskom.

These institutions are working in close collaboration with the Provincial Disaster Management Centre to manage possible emergencies such as road closures, infrastructure failures, and power outages. “We urge residents to avoid unnecessary travel during this period, as dangerous driving conditions and possible road disruptions are expected. Please stay informed through official channels and follow safety instructions,” added the MEC.

Potential hazards include:

  • Heavy rainfall leading to flooding of settlements and properties
  • Severe thunderstorms with damaging winds, hail, and lightning
  • Disruption of essential services and hazardous road conditions

Furthermore, authorities have urged residents to remain alert and follow real-time updates issued by SAWS and KZN CoGTA. Emergencies should be promptly reported to local disaster management centres to ensure swift assistance.

As KwaZulu-Natal braces for this potentially disruptive weather, residents are reminded that preparedness and caution remain the best defences against disaster. While provincial and municipal teams are on high alert, the safety of lives and property ultimately depends on individual action. Staying informed, avoiding unnecessary travel, and ensuring that homes and vehicles are secure will be vital in reducing potential risks.

With severe storms, heavy rainfall, and strong winds expected to impact parts of Newcastle, Ladysmith, and Vryheid, authorities stress that even moderate rainfall can rapidly turn dangerous. Exercising caution and acting responsibly could make a crucial difference in the days ahead.

Be safe and have a good weekend.
