Severe thunderstorms, accompanied by heavy downpours, damaging winds, frequent lightning, and significant amounts of small hail, are expected to affect the north-western parts of KwaZulu-Natal from Wednesday, 5 November 2025, until Thursday, 6 November 2025.
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a Level 2 warning for the province, signalling the potential for dangerous weather conditions.
According to the service, isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms will develop across KwaZulu-Natal from Wednesday and persist into Thursday.

However, SAWS has highlighted that some of these storms are likely to intensify in the north-western regions, producing heavy rainfall, damaging winds, frequent lightning, and substantial amounts of small hail.
The towns forecast to be impacted include:
- Newcastle
- Vryheid
- Ladysmith
- Dannhauser
- Utrecht
- Dundee
- Estcourt
- Indaka
- eDumbe
- Sobabili
- Msinga
- Nquthu
- Okhahlamba
As these severe conditions progress across the region, SAWS emphasises that communities may experience a range of disruptions.
These include localised damage to infrastructure and settlements, as well as flooding of vulnerable roads and bridges. Additionally, driving conditions are expected to become hazardous, with slippery surfaces and reduced visibility, while unpaved roads are likely to deteriorate further under the impact of heavy rainfall.
In response, SAWS has strongly advised residents to exercise caution or avoid travelling on bridges and roads in low-lying areas that may be prone to flooding or sinkholes. The public is also urged to refrain from outdoor activities, as lightning, hail, and floodwaters could result in serious injuries or fatalities.
Moreover, the weather service recommends that people remain indoors whenever possible, keeping a safe distance from windows.
Communities should also ensure that pets, livestock, and vehicles are secured in safe shelters to protect them from the elements and potential flying debris.
Given the anticipated severity of these storms, residents are urged to remain vigilant, adhere to official updates, and take proactive measures to safeguard lives, property, and essential assets. Prompt action and preparedness will be critical in reducing the impact of these dangerous weather conditions.

Furthermore, communities are encourage to monitor reliable weather services and media agencies for potential updates and official warnings.
