According to Newcastle SAPS spokesperson, Lizzy Arumugam, the suspects, identified as Sanele Mthethwa and Thuthuka Mchunu, are wanted by the Newcastle SAPS Vehicle Crime Investigation Unit in connection with numerous cases involving the theft of trucks and truck trailers.

Arumugam stated that both men are allegedly linked to a syndicate targeting heavy-duty vehicles in the area.

“They steal trucks and truck trailers from truck stops in the Newcastle area, and then sell them to individuals in the Mpumalanga area,” explained Arumugam, highlighting the organised nature of the criminal activities.

Given the gravity of the matter, Arumugam urged members of the public who may have information regarding the whereabouts of Mthethwa and Mchunu, or any details that may assist in the investigation, to contact the Investigating Officer, Detective Sergeant Hayes, on 078 984 6204 or 079 500 1447.

As the Newcastle SAPS call on the public’s assistance to apprehend these two men, vehicle theft continues to pose a significant challenge in Northern KwaZulu-Natal, particularly in Newcastle.

According to the South African Police Service’s crime statistics for the third quarter of 2024/2025 (October to December 2024), KwaZulu-Natal reported 1,477 vehicle thefts, with Newcastle identified as a hotspot due to its location along key transport routes. Furthermore, the Institute for Security Studies (ISS) highlights that organised crime syndicates in Northern KwaZulu-Natal exploit the region’s connectivity to major highways, facilitating the movement of stolen vehicles, particularly trucks, to neighbouring provinces such as Mpumalanga for illicit trade.

Similarly, Fidelity Services Group notes that truck stops in Northern KwaZulu-Natal remain vulnerable due to limited security infrastructure, thereby making them prime targets for syndicates.
