Road infrastructure in Ladysmith is receiving renewed attention, with the Alfred Duma Local Municipality allocating R12 million to two long-overdue construction projects aimed at improving transport and accessibility. These upgrades, targeting Malva Road and Mhlawaneni Road, are expected to address years of infrastructural challenges while boosting economic activity and job creation in the region.

According to the municipality’s Communications Unit, “The launch marks a significant milestone in the municipality’s efforts to enhance local infrastructure and create employment opportunities.”

Furthermore, Mayor Zama Sibisi emphasised that the road developments are not only about improved mobility but are part of a broader vision to uplift communities. “These upgrades will provide residents with better access to essential services and stimulate economic development,” he said.

For the Malva Road upgrade, the municipality appointed Sihlahlasiys’Hluma Construction (Pty) Ltd, with a project budget of R6 million and an expected duration of six months. The development will create approximately 14 local jobs and improve traffic flow and pedestrian safety in the area.

Similarly, Muntuza Engineering was awarded the contract for the Mhlawaneni Road project. Also budgeted at R6 million, this upgrade will also be completed within six months and generate 15 job opportunities for local residents. According to the municipality, the improvements will enhance road quality and accessibility for surrounding communities, cutting travel times and improving service delivery.

Both projects are funded by the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA).

In addition to the municipality’s efforts, the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport is implementing a R49 million rehabilitation of the P189 main road in Ladysmith.

The initiative is part of a R1 billion provincial road investment programme and aims to improve access to economic hubs, reduce travel delays, and support small businesses through job creation and infrastructure enhancement.

National investment is also contributing to improved road infrastructure in Ladysmith. SANRAL (South African National Roads Agency) is currently upgrading the N3 highway, which connects Ladysmith to Durban and Pietermaritzburg. One of the key projects, valued at R1.48 billion, involves expanding a 4km stretch between Dardanelles and Lynnfield Park into an eight-lane carriageway. Scheduled for completion in April 2025, the project includes significant allocations for local labour and SMME (small, medium, and micro-enterprise) involvement.

Furthermore, the KZN Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs is addressing a R10 billion maintenance backlog across its 20,000km road network.

Over 50 road infrastructure projects are underway across the province, with contractor panels such as ZNT 2038/2022 LG streamlining the delivery of upgrades like those on Malva and Mhlawaneni roads.

As these large-scale infrastructure projects unfold, they offer more than just physical improvements. They bring hope and confidence to local communities, create opportunities for businesses, and lay the groundwork for growth.
