The alarming incident occurred at approximately 2:30 PM, when the homeowner was startled by the sudden sound of gunshots within his property.

According to Amajuba District SAPS spokesperson, Constable Nonjabulo Langa, the homeowner immediately investigated the disturbance, only to be confronted by two men who began firing shots at him and his nephew, who was also present in the home at the time.

However, when the assailants opened fire, the 38-year-old homeowner promptly drew his own firearms to protect himself and his nephew. This decisive action led to the suspects fleeing the scene. Authorities were immediately notified of the incident, and a local security company successfully tracked down one of the suspects, while the second individual managed to evade capture.

While allegations of the incident being an armed robbery gone awry have been put forward, Constable Langa emphasised that investigations are ongoing.

The precise motive for the men’s forceful entry into the home and their decision to open fire on the homeowner and his nephew is still under thorough investigation.

Following this chilling incident, crime is increasingly becoming a serious cause for concern in Newcastle, with residential burglaries on the rise and armed robberies remaining a problem.

Addressing this matter, Constable Langa explained that the Amajuba District SAPS is increasing patrols throughout the entire Amajuba District, which encompasses Newcastle, Madadeni, Osizweni, Dannhauser, Utrecht, and Charlestown. “We also have a series of operations which we conduct on a weekly basis, where we focus on problematic areas,” she stated, adding that police officials from the aforementioned areas are collaborating to combat crime more efficiently.

However, as local law enforcement enhances patrols and conducts weekly operations targeting criminal activities, Constable Langa stressed that for the police to achieve true success, they require the full cooperation of the community. “We have sector commanders in town that oversee certain suburbs and parts of Newcastle. The SAPS is encouraging the community to get to know their sector commanders, and to join organisations such the Newcastle CPF and attend community meetings, so residents can tell us what the main concerns there are in their areas, so we as the police can make the necessary planning to address crime concerns. We are actively working on improving the community’s trust in the police, and we need the community’s assistance,” Constable Langa affirmed.

It should be noted that Newcastle is divided into six sectors. These sector divisions have been been established by the SAPS to coordinate efforts in specific areas and facilitate quicker responses to incidents. The sectors are defined as follows:

Sector 1:

  • CBD below Scott Street, Rank Area
  • Riverside – Light Industrial Area (Vlam) & Farmers Hall
  • CBD Residential – above the Hospital
  • Newcastle High School and Protection Services
  • CBD – Above Scott Street

Sector 2:

  • Lennoxton, Suryaville, Fernwood
  • Paradise
  • Fairleigh, Lenvillle, Siyahlala
  • Ekuseni Youth Centre

Sector 3:

  • Barry Hertzog Park
  • Amajuba Park
  • RTI & Iscor (Mittal)
  • Ncandu Park
  • Riverside Industrial Area
  • Madadeni Road
  • Mathukuza

Sector 4:

  • Pioneer Park
  • Schuinshoogte
  • Signal Hill
  • Sunny Ridge

Sector 5:

  • Amiel Park
  • Hutten Heights
  • Aviary Hill

Sector 6:

  • Arbor Park
  • Hilldrop
  • Karbochem/Airport
  • Vezubuhle
  • Ingagane
  • Ballengeich

Constable Langa highlighted that the officials assigned to these sectors are expected to hold regular meetings.

She emphasised the importance of residents attending these gatherings, enabling law enforcement to not only gain a clearer understanding of their safety concerns but also to demonstrate how they conduct the necessary planning to address these issues effectively.

In light of these persistent challenges, the collaborative efforts between the Newcastle SAPS and the community are more crucial than ever. By actively participating in sector meetings, engaging with local commanders, and joining community safety organisations, residents can play a pivotal role in shaping a more secure environment. This partnership is not merely about reporting crime; it’s about proactively identifying vulnerabilities and working hand-in-hand to implement preventative measures that deter criminal activity before it takes hold.

Ultimately, addressing the rising tide of crime in Newcastle requires a multifaceted approach that combines diligent police work with robust community engagement. As the SAPS intensifies its operations and patrols, the empowerment of residents through knowledge and participation will be instrumental in fostering a collective sense of responsibility and resilience. Only through such unified action can the community hope to safeguard its homes and ensure the well-being of its citizens.
