12 Killed in Devastating Collision on R34 near Vryheid

On Monday night, 16 June 2025, a head-on collision between a passenger bus and a truck on the R34 near Vryheid claimed the lives of 12 individuals.

According to the KZN Department of Transport, the precise circumstances surrounding the collision are yet to be confirmed.

However, it has been established that the bus was carrying supporters from a political party.

Furthermore, the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) report indicates that following the initial head-on impact, a truck collided with the side of the bus. Tragically, the sideswipe resulted in the following:

1. 12 passengers died and are being transported to Vryheid Mortuary.

2. 10 passengers sustained serious injuries and are receiving treatment at various local hospitals.

3. 22 passengers suffered minor injuries.

4. Six passengers emerged unscathed.

5. Both the truck and bus drivers survived and have been admitted to hospitals.

Moreover, the road was promptly closed to facilitate emergency services in delivering critical care to the surviving passengers.

The KZN Department of Transport has confirmed that it will collaborate with the Road Traffic Management Corporation and the South African Police Service to conduct a thorough investigation.

  1. It is time that both the owners and drivers of the heavy vehicles (trucks, busses etc) be held accountable.. it the truck is not in perfect roadworthy condition the owner must be fined. The drivers must only drive for a few hours and stop for a short break.
