The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a warning about an unusually intense Cut-Off Low (COL) system expected to bring severe winter conditions across the country.

This system is forecast to persist over the eastern provinces until at least mid-next week.

SAWS reports that the weather system will begin affecting the Western and Northern Cape from the early hours of Saturday, 7 June 2025. “By Monday, 9 June and Tuesday, 10 June 2025, this large and severe winter system will shift eastwards, impacting the central and eastern provinces,” the service noted. A sharp and widespread drop in daytime temperatures is expected across most provinces—excluding, potentially, Limpopo.

Furthermore, SAWS has outlined several extreme weather impacts associated with this impending system:

  • Snowfalls are anticipated across nearly every province, with the exception of Limpopo. Some of these snowfalls are expected to be disruptive, potentially impeding traffic flow over mountain passes (for instance, the N3 highway at Van Reenen’s Pass on Monday, 9 June 2025, and Tuesday, 10 June 2025).
  • Strong, damaging surface winds are forecast for extensive parts of the interior provinces from Sunday, elevating the risk of wildfires, particularly over the central and eastern interior, ahead of the cold front. These extreme conditions are expected to persist over some eastern provinces until Wednesday.
  • Strong to near-gale force coastal winds and very rough seas will affect the south-west coast from Friday, extending to the south and east coasts during Saturday, and enduring until at least Tuesday along the east coast.
  • Heavy rainfall is expected to lead to localised flooding and infrastructure damage over parts of the Eastern Cape coast and adjacent interior on Sunday, shifting to southern KwaZulu-Natal on Monday.
  • Bitterly cold daytime conditions are predicted for numerous provinces from Sunday, with maximum temperatures unlikely to exceed +10°C. These conditions will be exacerbated by strong, gusty winds.
  • There is also a risk of severe thunderstorms, potentially associated with damaging hail and/or destructive winds, over some provinces including North West, Gauteng, Mpumalanga, and KwaZulu-Natal during Monday and Tuesday.
