Man Fatally Stabbed Near Newcastle Showgrounds

Newcastle SAPS have commenced a murder investigation following the fatal stabbing of a 50-year-old man on Hardwick Street, located in close proximity to the Newcastle Showgrounds, in the early hours of Saturday, 31 May 2025.

As confirmed by Newcastle SAPS Spokesperson Lizzy Arumugam, the incident was reported shortly after 1 am when police received an urgent call regarding a murder.

Upon arrival, officers found that paramedics had declared the victim deceased, and interviews with nearby witnesses were promptly initiated.

Several witnesses, having recently departed from the showgrounds, discovered the victim at the scene.

The motive for the murder remains under investigation, with police yet to determine whether the incident stemmed from a robbery gone awry or an altercation that preceded the stabbing.

Concluding, Arumugam stated, “Police investigations into the crime are still underway, with the investigating officers following the necessary steps to bring the perpetrators to book.”

  1. Many many years ago we used have a Mardi gras in this town with the entire CBD closed down. We never experienced such things like this back then. Saps need to step up and Start doing their job urgently
