Police fatally shot two suspected cash-in-transit robbers on Thursday, 22 May 2025, in Wasbank, near Ladysmith.

KwaZulu-Natal SAPS Spokesperson, Colonel Robert Netshiunda, explained that police acted on intelligence pinpointing the suspects’ hideout.
The individuals were wanted for six cash-in-transit robberies in KwaDukuza, Verulam, Nyoni, Greytown, Phoenix, and Langslaagte between June 2022 and March 2025.
“Police located the house where the suspects were hiding. Upon arrival and announcing their presence, the suspects fired at officers, leading to a shootout. Both suspects were fatally wounded,” said Colonel Netshiunda, confirming no officers were injured.
According to the SAPS, one suspect had an active arrest warrant for possessing explosives and ammunition. Nevertheless, two firearms were found with the suspects.
This incident draws attention to the persistent challenge of cash-in-transit (CIT) robberies in KwaZulu-Natal, which saw 11 cases reported between July and September 2024—an increase from eight during the same period the previous year, according to the South African Police Service (SAPS). In March 2025 alone, SAPS arrested 160 suspects for various robberies, including CIT heists, during coordinated operations across the province.

The fatal confrontation in Wasbank highlights the pressing need to curb KwaZulu-Natal’s rise in cash-in-transit robberies, with SAPS’s recent arrests and targeted operations reflecting a firm commitment to restoring public safety and dismantling organised crime networks in the province..
