The incident occurred on Sunday, 27 April 2025, at a farm along the D96 Road, also known as the Vulintaba Road, shortly before 5 pm.

The farm, chosen as the wedding venue, featured a dam on its open and spacious grounds, which became the site of the fatal event.

According to Amajuba District SAPS Spokesperson, Constable Nonjabula Langa, two male guests were photographing each other by the dam during the ceremony, documenting the joyous occasion. However, the situation turned fatal when one man slipped and fell into the dam. His friend, unable to swim, immediately alerted other guests for assistance. By the time help arrived, the man was found floating in the water, unresponsive, and efforts to revive him were unsuccessful.

Constable Langa confirmed that emergency responders retrieved the man from the dam and pronounced him dead at the scene. Authorities suspect no foul play, but an inquest has been opened to examine the circumstances of the fall, including the condition of the dam’s edge and any environmental factors.

The investigation aims to clarify why the man was unable to escape the water and whether safety measures at the venue were adequate.

The tragedy has prompted local authorities to urge event venues to implement robust safety protocols, such as clear signage and physical barriers around water bodies, to prevent similar incidents.

As the inquest continues, Newcastillian News extends its deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.

Just to be clear – this incident did not occur at a public “wedding venue” as the article is misleading in this regard.
The incident occurred during a traditional wedding celebration event, the wedding which was held at the home of a family who resides on a farm. It was a private function at the home of a farm dwelling where this occurred. The dam is close to the place where the wedding celebrations were being held.
