Life Lost and Schoolchildren Injured on Albert Wessels Drive, Newcastle

A catastrophic collision took place along Albert Wessels Drive on Tuesday morning, 15 April 2025, resulting in one fatality and multiple others injured.

The event occurred shortly after 7 am, after a taxi transporting schoolchildren crashed into a Ford sedan. Emergency personnel arrived at the scene within minutes of the incident.

According to officials who assessed the situation on-site, the exact sequence of events leading to the collision remains under scrutiny. Tragically, one occupant in the Ford sedan succumbed to the grievous injuries sustained and was pronounced dead at the scene. Alongside this loss, the taxi driver and several young passengers endured injuries of varying severity.

Craig Botha, Spokesperson for KwaZulu Private Ambulance, detailed the response of their medical team, confirming that paramedics administered urgent care to six affected individuals. “Once the patients had been stabilised, they were transported to a nearby hospital for further treatment.” Among those attended, two suffered significant injuries, while four experienced comparatively minor harm.

Despite the efforts of KwaZulu Private Ambulance to support six patients, authorities have yet to establish the full tally of those injured within the taxi.

Traffic movement along the thoroughfare was impeded in the aftermath, as police, traffic officials, paramedics, and additional emergency responders collaborated to tend to the wounded and restore order to the scene.

With an official inquiry now poised to commence, motorists are being strongly advised to exercise heightened vigilance due to prevailing weather conditions that have rendered road surfaces perilously slick. The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a level 4 warning for disruptive rain, which is anticipated to affect Newcastle and its neighbouring towns, exacerbating the risks posed to drivers across the region.

Taxi drivers are in general the worst drivers. Those who are on the road often, can testify to this.Reckless and negligent driving, picking up and offloading passengers wherever they feel like, double and triple parking, running red traffic lights and stops etc. The condition of our roads,non-functional traffic lights and lack of road markings is also a contributing factor.

  4. Kevin Pohotona says:
