Eskom Environmental Manager Killed in Ladysmith

An Environmental Manager employed at Eskom’s Ingula Power Station was tragically gunned down in Ladysmith, leading the Ladysmith South African Police Service (SAPS) to commence a formal murder investigation.

According to details confirmed by Warrant Officer Basheer Khan, the Ladysmith SAPS Spokesperson, 34-year-old Phalan Nthlane was shot dead in the early hours of Sunday morning, 13 April 2024.

At the time of the incident, he was seated in his vehicle along Murchison Street, in close proximity to a local nightclub in Ladysmith, when an assailant fired at him from short range.

Nthlane suffered a gunshot wound to the head and was immediately transported to a hospital, where he subsequently passed away due to the severity of his injuries.

It has also been established that this was not the initial attempt on Nthlane’s life.

However, no additional specifics regarding the earlier incidents were available at the time of this report. The reason behind the killing of the environmental manager at the Ingula Power Station, a 1,332 MW pumped-storage hydroelectric facility located on the border of KwaZulu-Natal and Free State provinces, has yet to be determined.

It should be noted that Nthlane was both a nominee and recipient of the Regional Risk Manager of the Year award for the 2024 Cycle, in addition to being honored as the Integrity and Zero Harm Awards Winner.

As the police are now actively investigating the circumstances surrounding this event, the public is being called on for support. If anyone possesses information that could aid the investigation, they are encouraged to contact Ladysmith Police at 036 638 3308 / 3309 / 3310 / 3312.
