Bridge along Industria Road in Newcastle Begins to Collapse

A serious hazard is developing along Industria Road in Newcastle’s Industrial Area, where a bridge has begun to collapse. This comes as a section along its edge has given way, leaving pedestrians and motorists vulnerable to a sudden drop. Cracks are now spreading into the tarmac from the damaged area, signalling further potential deterioration.

An official from the Newcastle Municipality, speaking anonymously, provided context on the situation.

“It is suspected that the recent rainfalls and flooding are responsible, however, this is not the first time that the bridge has collapsed. During the course of 2019, a large hole formed in the road, forcing the Municipality to corner the road off, before repairing it. Now, with the bridge showing signs of further damage, motorists need to be exceptionally cautious when travelling along the road.”

However, Councillor Bertie Meiring of the Newcastle Municipality offered additional perspective, explaining, “It is important to remember that one of the biggest enemies to tar is water, and with the recent rainfalls, the flooding in areas, as well as sewage systems overflowing because of the influx of water, tar surfaces in town have become more brittle. This is also one of the reasons why the potholes in town have also increased in size and number.”

Furthermore, the Municipality’s roads department has been notified of the bridge’s condition and plans to address it soon, though no specific timeline has been released. Councillor Meiring noted, “The Newcastle Municipality will be addressing the damages and the potential costs of the recent storms in Newcastle in an upcoming council meeting, where we will then discuss the steps forward.”

Until then, residents using Industria Road are urged to remain vigilant, especially with more inclement weather expected in Newcastle.
