A tragic collision on Normandien Road, near Dannhauser, has resulted in one fatality and left five others, including two children, with injuries.
The devastating incident occurred on Monday, 10 February 2025, when two bakkies collided head-on. Although the precise cause of the collision remains undetermined, an official at the scene suggested that the wet road conditions might have played a pivotal role. Road Angels South Africa further noted that the area was enveloped in heavy mist, which could have also significantly contributed to the crash.
The severity of the collision was such that law enforcement had to summon or the “jaws of life” to the scene to free two individuals trapped within one of the vehicles.
Ziyaad Warasally of ER24 Emergency Medical Services described the rapid response to the incident, stating, “One patient unfortunately passed away at the scene of the collision, while the five remaining patients sustained slight to moderate injuries.” He added that ER24 transported four of the injured to the hospital, while KZN EMS attended to the fifth.
Given the speculation that wet road conditions were a key factor in the crash, Warasally issued a stern advisory for drivers. With weather forecasts predicting additional rainfall and thunderstorms, he emphasised, “Motorists should drive just below the speed limit, keep their lights on during bad weather, and keep a safe distance from other vehicles when it is raining.”
Furthermore, Road Angels South Africa wholly concurred with Warasally, highlighting, “Bad road conditions and unfavourable weather is a bad combination, and adjusting your speed to these conditions is advised.”
It should be noted that the condition of the Normandien and Chelmsford Road has long been a point of contention due to its deplorable state.
As reported by Newcastillian News in January 2025, the road’s poor condition has had a detrimental effect not only on local businesses and farmers but also on a school, leading some farmers to take matters into their own hands by attempting to repair the road.

As I stated previously and publicly. The conditions of our roads a have opened the municipality up for civil liability.
Unfortunately in this case a life was lost.
Further claims for damages are revenant and immenant.
The blood is on those in authority.
Two bakkies, I don’t think, one was a Fortuner.
Please, as a matter of urgency, there are no visible, or any at all, warning road signs to indicate the danger ahead of that road. There are no barriers with arrows indicating that there is a sharp S-turn ahead, no speed limit signs, no overtaking signs.
