In a landmark enforcement sweep in Newcastle, authorities have detained a cadre of foreign nationals engaged in the clandestine manufacture and illicit registration of SIM cards.
This strategic action was executed over the weekend, under the auspices of an intelligence-driven initiative, code-named Vala Umgodi Newcastle. Lieutenant Colonel Simphiwe Mhlongo, Spokesperson for the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, commonly known as the Hawks, revealed that this operation was a concerted effort involving the synergy of the Newcastle Organised Crime Unit, the KZN Provincial Tactical Response Team, and the Pietermaritzburg K9 Unit.
At a location kept confidential for operational security, the sweep resulted in the arrest of two Chinese nationals and 22 Malawian women.
“They were found manufacturing SIM cards and then using machinery to RICA them,” Lieutenant Colonel Mhlongo articulated, emphasising the technical sophistication of the illicit enterprise.
The operation yielded a substantial haul, including a range of computers, laptops, an extensive stockpile of SIM cards, and advanced registration devices, all integral to their covert activities.
Following this significant interdiction, Lieutenant Colonel Mhlongo updated the public on the legal proceedings. He explained that the two Chinese nationals, initially scheduled for a court appearance on Tuesday, 28 January 2025, at Newcastle Courts, saw their case deferred to Monday, 3 February.
“However, the 22 Malawian women will be appearing in court on Thursday, 30 January,” Lieutenant Colonel Mhlongo stated, signalling the commencement of judicial proceedings aimed at upholding the rule of law against this intricate network of fraud.
Furthermore, Constable Langa, Spokesperson for Amajuba District SAPS, claimed no other information could be shared at present as it was a developing matter.

This is the results of our laxity in handling our security portfolios.Our intelligence is weak and our boarder management is weak.We have also a weak prosecution record.We give in to foreigners and protect them at the expense of local PPL.This is just one bust where are the others with such a prevalence of unaccounted SIM card in the hands of criminals.South Africa is a banana republic if we don’t fix it now we will regret it later
Let’s give credit whenever it is due. This sounds like one of the occassions when the law intervened effectively and this must be acknowledged and encouraged.

I totally agree with the notion of laxity and intelligence not being utilised. We are a country that is too linient in a number of aspects hence we find ourselves with such occurences.
We need to reset our position sporadically.
