The birth of a child is an act of love, a profound moment that weaves together the lives of parents in a tapestry of joy and excitement. For one remarkable woman from Dannhauser, this act was magnified to an extraordinary degree, as she welcomed not one, but three new lives into her heart and home.
On 9 November 2024, Gugulethu Magubane gave birth to her triplets at Mediclinic Newcastle, beginning an odyssey few can fathom.
This journey, laden with both elation and apprehension, took an unexpected turn as her babies entered the world two months before their anticipated arrival, bringing with them a whirlwind of emotions.
Guided by the compassionate expertise of Mediclinic Newcastle’s esteemed Paediatric Specialist, Dr Busi Mahlaba, and Obstetrician, Dr Lethabo Kekana, Magubane shared her deeply moving journey. “When I first heard I was carrying triplets, I was overwhelmed with shock. But as the reality settled in, my heart swelled with an indescribable excitement,” she recounted, her eyes reflecting the joy that had since taken root in her soul.
Magubane’s family was already vibrant, with three sons aged 16, 9, and 6, each a testament to life’s joys and challenges. The arrival of her triplets expanded her family’s circle in a manner that felt overwhelming and breathtaking.
“My sons are named Surprise and Gift, and my daughter, Zanokuhle, each name a symbol of the love and hope they brought into our lives,” she explained, her voice carrying the weight of each name’s significance. Zanokuhle, translating to ‘bring good,’ was chosen with the yearning and anticipation of welcoming a daughter into her fold.
Reflecting on the physicality of her pregnancy, Magubane shared a chuckle, yet one could sense the trials she endured. “Walking was reduced to mere steps because it tired me out, and sleep became difficult because my stomach grew so big. It was an experience unlike any other, one that will echo in my heart forever.”
However, the premature onset of labour brought with it a surge of fear and worry, emotions that any parent would recognise in the face of uncertainty. Yet, in these moments of vulnerability, Magubane found solace through the care of Dr Mahlaba and the dedicated team at Mediclinic Newcastle’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
“I would really like to thank Dr Mahlaba and the Mediclinic Newcastle team for being there for me and going out of their way to care for my children and myself. They went out of their way to help me and my babies. Even when I started running out of milk, they helped guide me and showed me what supplements I could take to produce more milk and continue caring for my babies,” she said.

The day her babies were cleared to leave the hospital, 20 January 2025, was one of pure, unadulterated joy for Magubane.
“I did not want to leave my babies, so I did my best to stay in Newcastle during the two months they were in the NICU because they were premature, and I really missed my home and family during that period. I only went home to Dannhauser about two times. It was also a bit tiring, as I would come to the hospital several times a day just to be with them, and now I am looking forward to being able to hold them as much as possible,” she shared, her words painting a picture of a mother’s relentless love and commitment.
As she now embarks on this new chapter, nurturing her triplets, Dr Mahlaba spoke of the delivery with awe. “Where most mothers will have a caesarean, Ms Magubane gave natural birth, with the babies coming 20 minutes apart,” began Dr Mahlaba. This she noted, saw her and the Mediclinic Newcastle team working with total precision together, and with as much care and speed as possible to ensure that all three infants were stabilised, healthy and received the necessary care due to them being premature.
Furthermore, Dr Mahlaba noted that while stabilising all three babies at birth, only one of three babies needed more medical attention, but he quickly bounced back and kept up to pace with his two siblings.
“Other than that, the triplets were among the easiest babies I delivered, they gave us absolutely no issues and grew stronger and healthier by the day,” she smiled, her compassion for the infants evident.
Now, as Gugulethu Magubane takes Surprise, Gift, and Zanokuhle back to their family in Dannhauser, she extended her heartfelt thanks once more to the amazing team at Mediclinic Newcastle, who made the journey possible.

Congratulations to the proud parents on your triple blessings of joy. I am in awe that mum chose natural birth and applaud her tough choice. Mediclinic saw their FIRST set of triplets 20 years ago when my triplets (2girls & a boy) were delivered by Caesarian under the watchful eye of Dr Burnard and his team. Dr Vilane provided peadiatric care. The nursing staff of the maternity ward and the neo natal were truly angels and I am truly grateful to all at Mediclinic for the support and care during my stay. At that time babies could be viewed through the viewing window and there was always a constant stream of visitors coming to look at the Triplets. I was fortunate to have had the opportunity to stay on at the hospital with my 2 girls while my son was still thriving in an incubator. 22 days after their birth I left the hospital with my 3 bundles of joy.
I wish the new parents all the best cos it’s gonna be a bumpy ride.
Wow! That is brilliant! Thank you for sharing this!
Congratulations on your triple blessings!
May God continue to bless your precious babies with good health and happiness!
