The complexities of affordable healthcare has long been a tough task for the residents of Newcastle, especially with the ever-rising cost of living. However, a ray of hope has now dawned upon the community with the arrival of the Transnet Phelophepha Train, which has triumphantly rolled into Newcastle.

This comes as the Phelophepha Train pulled into Newcastle Train Station on Thursday, 23 January 2025, with its dedicated team ready to embark on an ambitious endeavour to bring comprehensive healthcare directly to the heart of the local community.
It’s imperative to acknowledge that the Phelophepha Train is not just a vehicle but a unique mobile sanctuary of health and education in South Africa, coordinated by the Transnet Foundation alongside the Department of Health and various other strategic partners.
For those unfamiliar with the Phelophepha Train, its core mission is to extend medical services to those in South Africa’s most underserved and remote areas, where access to healthcare is not just a luxury but a distant dream. Beyond healthcare, it doubles as an educational ark, fostering literacy, imparting computer skills, and nurturing early childhood development.
For the residents of Newcastle, the Phelophepha Train unfurls a tapestry of healthcare services, including:
- General Health Check-ups: These encompass meticulous medical examinations designed to diagnose and manage a spectrum of health issues, coupled with specialized treatment and education for conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, asthma, and HIV/AIDS.
- Dental Care: A full suite of dental services awaits, from routine check-ups and cleanings to fillings, extractions, and vital education on oral hygiene.
- Optometry Services: Comprehensive eye tests are available to address vision problems, with the added convenience of on-site glasses manufacturing and dispensing from the train’s well-equipped optics lab.
- Counseling Services: Mental health support is just a step away, providing counseling for trauma, stress, and overall psychological well-being.
According to Phelophepha Train representatives, services will commence on Friday, 24 January 2024, from 7:30 am to 4 pm. Services will pause on the weekend, resuming from Monday, 27 January 2025, through to Friday, 31 January 2025, with the same operating hours.

On the evening of Friday, 31 January 2025, the train will set off for its next destinations—Ladysmith, Lions River, Empangeni, and Ulundi—continuing its mission to uplift these neighboring communities with the same level of care and commitment. With the Phelophepha Train providing medical services at a fraction of the usual cost, Newcastillians are encouraged to seize this golden window of opportunity during its week-long visit.

It’s a good initiative for our community of Newcastle, however from past experiences not everyone gets attended to and people sleep outside just to get to visit the services being provided, especially the eye clinic.
When is it coming to Gqebera or where can we access its schedule?
