On Sunday, 12 January 2025, under the shadow of dark clouds and amid persistent rainfall, law enforcement was confronted with a grim scene as the body of a man was discovered floating in the river near Scott Street, just before it flows into Boundary Road.
The tragic event unfolded shortly after 9am, when an observant pedestrian noticed the deceased and without delay, summoned assistance.
Security companies and Newcastle’s South African Police Service (SAPS) responded to the call. Addressing the incident, SAPS Spokesperson Constable Langa explained, “The man was found floating face down in the water, he had a backpack on and a payslip in his possession, which allowed us to identify him on the scene.”
However, Constable Langa clarified that the precise cause of the man’s death could not be confirmed at this time. “An inquest case has been opened and police investigations into the deceased’s passing will be conducted,” she assured.
While the definitive cause of the man’s demise remains under investigation, the public is earnestly encouraged to come forward with any information they might have.
Such cooperation could provide the deceased’s family with closure and ensure that justice follows its course.

I wish this time justice can be save because that the second person found on that scene and no one has ever been arrested it’s very painful that’s my father that was found dead floating I still can’t believe that he just left us without even admitted to hospital we didn’t have a chance to say goodbye
