Across South Africa’s vast landscapes and bustling urban and rural centres, potholes have transitioned from being minor nuisances to significant challenges. These road hazards compromise vehicle integrity and impose substantial financial burdens on motorists.

This guide provides drivers with a detailed roadmap for navigating the often intricate process of claiming damages from pothole-related incidents. It also aims to raise awareness of the broader struggle against deteriorating road infrastructure.
Understanding the Pothole Claims Process
If your vehicle sustains damage due to a pothole—whether it affects tyres, rims, or suspension—you are entitled to seek compensation. Here’s how to proceed:
To substantiate your claim, compile the following essential documentation:
- Certified ID: Verifies your identity as the claimant.
- Affidavit: A sworn statement detailing the incident, adding legal weight to your claim.
- Photographic Evidence: Clear images of the pothole and the resulting vehicle damage provide undeniable proof.
- Repair Quotations: Obtain at least three quotes to demonstrate the financial impact.
- Repair Invoices: If repairs have already been completed, these invoices validate the costs incurred.
- Vehicle Ownership: Documentation linking you to the vehicle involved in the incident.
- Towing Costs: Include receipts for towing expenses if the vehicle was rendered inoperable.
- Insurance Affidavit: If your insurance policy excludes pothole damage, an affidavit confirming this can strengthen your claim.
Filing Claims: Urban vs. Rural Areas
Urban Areas
- Official Channels: Use municipal websites and specific forms for a streamlined process.
- Email Submissions: Cities like Johannesburg provide dedicated email addresses (e.g., claims@jra.org.za) for direct submissions.
- Cape Town’s Requirements: Ensure you provide evidence that the pothole was previously reported to support your claim.
Rural and Small Towns
- Direct Engagement: Personal visits to municipal offices can offer clearer procedural guidance.
- Informal Processes: Be prepared for less structured procedures that may require hands-on involvement.
- Patience for Processing: Limited resources often mean longer processing times, requiring persistence.
For incidents on national roads such as the N1, N2, N3, N11 and N14, contact the South African National Roads Agency Limited (SANRAL) directly.
Lodging Your Claim
- Contact: Claims for damages should be directed to the correct government entity.
- Regular Follow-ups: Keep your claim active by maintaining consistent communication with the relevant authorities.
Insurance vs. Municipal Claims
- Insurance Review: Verify whether your insurance policy covers pothole damage to avoid duplicate claims.
- Single Path: You cannot pursue both insurance and municipal claims for the same incident. Choose the most suitable option.
Prevention and Community Action
Beyond individual claims, collective efforts are vital for addressing South Africa’s pothole crisis. Apps like Pothole Patrol and Vala Zonke empower citizens to report road hazards efficiently:
- Pothole Patrol: Collaborates with local authorities to expedite repairs, offering real-time updates.
- Vala Zonke: A SANRAL initiative that tracks pothole reports and contributes to a national effort for improved road conditions.
These tools not only assist with future claims but also foster community-driven advocacy for safer roads.

Driving Change Through Accountability
Claiming compensation for pothole damage is more than just financial recovery—it’s a step towards holding authorities accountable and advocating for improved road infrastructure. Each claim highlights the urgent need for better maintenance and contributes to safer travel for all.
For those embarking on this process, government and SANRAL websites provide detailed guidance. Community forums also serve as invaluable resources, offering shared experiences and support as South Africans collectively push for smoother, safer roads.

Hello since i habe submitted mine last year may i havent received nothing from the municipality ..thanks
This is a good initiative worth our support and actioning as responsible citizens. Thank you.
Thank you and I agree, hold gov accountable!
Please go and check the “DONGAS” in Sutherland and Greaves str.
Hardwick and Murchison that carries the heaviest traffic! It is horrifying!!
What about if i don’t have car insurance,so i can’t claim
I had a terrible time travelling down to Clarence via Viviers where the road was so bad and I hit some very big potholes due to large trucks coming onto me and having to swerve I lost two tires and I damaged the bumper at the bottom I had to replace the rims And the tires in order to be able to get back to Johannesburg how do I claim under the circumstances
I must challenge the comments made by Geoffrey. I’ve very recently traveled to and from Clarens via Villiers, Frankfort and Bethlehem. The road was in good condition and devoid of any potholes. However, an extended trip from Clarens to Fiksburg was torturous. The road between Fouriesburg and Fiksburg was a nightmare…potholes every two meters. It’s a narrow road and the presence of the potholes makes driving conditions extremely dangerous.
The fouriesburg – ficksburg road is mostly patched up now… more permanent repair is currently underway. Just a whole lot of stop and go – due to the repair work
That’s the right thing to do !
Vala Zonke is unresponsive
Tried claiming through the nearest municipality is KZN, no joy.
Polokwane must be one of the worst towns only in my street Impala there must be about 100 potholes there is one spesifiek one that is about 1m deep
I lost a tire on Thabo Mbeki driving from Flora park towards Mediclinic. The tire and rim are unsalvagable
I believe & suggests that “operation Vala mgodi”should be used to target potholes as well!
I believe the government and municipality must be held accountable we pay rax and rates for these services
Good day

I’m waiting 7 years from the road agency fund in jhb. For 2 tyres and rims. They still working on it. The claim was sent through from my ins company
Pot holes are purely lack of maintenance.
Lazy and in-ept people who are unable to fulfill their job descriptions.
Outsourcing opens doors to corruption and dishonesty.
Those who can honestly support the damage to vehicles, loss of income etc should be compensated.
Compensation is the responsibility of the municipality concerned.
100 percent
I have a 7seater car with side sliding doors.Today i travelled from Kleinzee to Springbok. The road in terrible condition. Yon cannot see where all the holes are. It is cover with sand. Hello
My name is Petrus L Ramokgonami
I’m based in Limpopo Living in Polokwane city I would like to know.between department of transport and Local municipality which is Polokwane which one to go with regards to the Pothole claim
Thanks
Mokopane is the most worst place with potholes. Community members are trying to close them but when it rain more potholes develop. Even the main road N11 which is the busiest road has potholes. My front tyre is damaged because of the potholes in Thabo Mbeki street. In town ,even gravel roads are better. Maybe this process will bring improvement .
Thank you
How do we check if Matjhabeng Municipality also has cover for such as I damaged a tyre and rim due to potholes in the City of Welkom?
Will I be paid fully if I send all required documents coz my insurance doesn’t wanna pay full amount per Tyre
Ha! Ha! Ha! I have done all the above to claim for damage to my car wheel after it was crunched in a Joburg Water “pothole!” more than a year ago. I have a file full of correspondence on it. Nobody at Joburg Water Customer Service replies to emails. There are no phone numbers or email addresses for any of the so called responsible bigwigs at Joburg Water. I had no success with the also impossible to pin down African Dawn the City’s insurers. Two of my local councillors I phoned in an effort to attain a phone number for someone at Joburg Water who actually answers phones told me they have the same problem!!!! There are three different street addresses to Joburg Water. To which do I courier my claim? I have also spent a fortune on phone calls to track “officials” down. Can anyone out there help?
We had a claim but where never paid out. They gave us the run around. Was raining pothole was full of water said it is the drivers responsibility to be cautious. Sad how they pass the buck on with some ppl, but others get full compensation. Really sad as we pensioners.
Hello since I have sent my claim last year may i haven’t received anything from municipality..thanks
Road from Kroonstad to Steynsrus for years now not repaired. Detours not even maintained. Who was contractor?? Officials?? Where did the money go? Blatant corruption in Freestate and no one is batting an eye. Suffered huge damage on that road and very lucky on others. This is a goverment issue and will never improve. Submit a claim? You must be yoking!! Towns and neighbourhood roads selectively repaired. Why are we paying taxes. No consequence no responsibility no skills.
10 years now and no one saying anything about buitekant road in Soshanguve Government officials and roads public works department they are very much aware of this road but nothing has changed poor people using the road as they don’t have a choice.
The main road in Kakamas Northern Cape is full of potholes… think it is Sanrall that must repair but nothing is happening.
The road between Dundee and Vryheid KZN is a nightmare aswell as Vryheid / Utrecht / Newcastle road.
Vryheid/Paulpietersburg/Piet Retief/Ermelo also full of potholes.
Government only upkeep toll roads and don’t worry about anything else.
Can someone please attend to potholes in witbank, can’t really mention an area coz they are everywhere and this rain is not helping
For the past 20 years residents of Auret Road in Brentwood Park Benoni Gauteng have interacted with Ekurhuleni, MMC’s, DA Councillor’s, AfriForum, Benoni City Times, social media and various influential individuals for assistance to uplift and renovate Auret road which had been approved by council. (R8 Million) after Covid the funds had mysteriously disappeared. This road has still not been attended to. Ekurhuleni will not humor paying for repairs to vehicles, of which there are many. No accountability whatsoever, no intent to assist these residents.
Thank you very much for sharing this information which will help us to act when our tyres are damaged by the potholes!!!
It is only a pleasure!
It is ridiculous that SANRAL, which main job is to maintain the roads in SA, needs an app to do their work.
I cannot for the life of me understand this mindset. Just do what you are supposed to do, what your repsonsibiluty is, then there is no need for potholes, for citizens to report, for apps and for damages to be paid.
Spot on! If all relevant entities just took care of their responsibilities, then we would not be faced with such ridiculous issues.
Thank you 🙏
You are most welcome!!
Please go and look at the road between Wolmaranstad and Schweizer Reneke it’s poor and dangerous
LMAO.. Government is too busy stealing to care. Zuma stole over 1 trillion via tenders. Guptas bought them all properties in Dubai. Zuma’s son flaunts his R25 million Dubai apartment and luxury lifestyle. They should have been charged for treason. Joke is that people still think that they are innocent…
Reading the comments I cannot see that action is taken we are always on the loosing side “WHY” paying all the taxes that’s killing us and nothing gets done about it fire the lot that cannot do their jobs.. to many excuses “FRUSTRATING”
Hi all. Hope i can get assistants drom anyone. What steps can i take if my local munisipality refuse to pay my claim. All paper were in place. They claim i was speeding, but the pothole is in a roundabout.
Thanks.
At waterfall kwadabeka area ward 3.we have no tarmac road,ad the road it’s slipply ad lots of potholes the big ones
The road between Scweizer-Reneke and wolmaransstad is a disaster, how many people must die before fixing that road??
This is bullshit. They make the reason to claim highly unlikely and impossible
Nonsense. I did all of the above for a claim. I was successful until the agent said they are deducting 40% from my successful claim as fees. I objected. Suddenly my entire case profile disappeared!!!
JRA has passed my pothole damage claim to JW. The excuse is that the pothole is the results of water leaking from a water drain therefore not their responsibility. That was in October 2024 have not head from JW phone calls not answered. The pothole is still there full of water to this day.
Mpumalanga is worse, especially on roads that are used by busses, l had a damaged Tyre when rushing to work, potholes are being perched but the perched holes sink after some days and open again, this is worrisome and makes it difficult to drive.
The R521 between Polokwane to Dendron has been forgotten. Is heavily loaded with trucks even more than National roads in the whole Limpopo Province, surprisingly, it is the most dangerous road and not well maintained. Expect a pothole every kilometer on that road. The road is poorly maintained, uneven, narrow, not fully marked and eish a nightmare to travel on. Regardless of countless fatal accidents that were reported on that road, no improvement whatsoever is noticed on road.
Road users in this part of the world are exposed to high risk of accident (collision and loss of vehicle control). Though it is a provincial road, it services international traffic (mostly trucks) and the road is not ideal.
Hope this will receive attention.
I wish to challenge all mayor’s of municipal offices to get out of their fancy chauffered cars into a small sedan, and drive themselves around for 1 day. Then they can see and feel for themselves the challenges
