Enduring rigorous trials that tested their physical endurance, mental resilience, and teamwork, the Newcastle SAPS Public Order Protection (POP) Unit, fondly known as the Red Mambas, has proven itself as a force to be reckoned with. This comes as the dynamic team achieved an impressive third place in the prestigious SWAT Challenge, outperforming numerous other units from across South Africa.

Between 25 and 29 November 2024, the Red Mambas represented Newcastle in Pretoria during the tactical event.
A dedicated team of 12 members, supported by four reserves, participated in a series of demanding activities, including the Tactical Event, Assault Event, Officer Rescue, the Tower Event, and an Obstacle Course. These challenges were designed to push their abilities to the limit, testing everything from strategic skills to physical endurance and teamwork under pressure.

For their debut in this competition, the Red Mambas were determined to leave a lasting impression, and they did just that by securing third place. Warrant Officer Philisile Zikalala, the senior female trainer of the Newcastle POP Unit, shared her immense pride in the team’s achievement, calling it a testament to their hard work and determination.
“The challenge went extremely well, especially considering this was the first time we competed, and we secured third place,” said Warrant Officer Zikalala, her pride evident. “I am extremely proud of the team for all the hard work they put in.”
Their remarkable accomplishment not only brought pride to Newcastle but also highlighted the exceptional calibre of the POP Unit. Reflecting on the months of rigorous training that led to this achievement, Warrant Officer Zikalala emphasised that the team’s success has further motivated them to elevate their crime-fighting capabilities.
Furthermore, the POP Unit holds a critical role in maintaining law and order, often in challenging and volatile situations. From dispersing unruly crowds to removing road barricades, the Red Mambas’ responsibilities require calmness under pressure, quick thinking, and unwavering dedication to public safety. Their duties often involve using measures such as rubber bullets, tear gas, and stun grenades to control unrest while safeguarding the public.

Commenting on their motivation and the lessons gained from the event, Warrant Officer Zikalala noted that the team’s participation had been an invaluable learning experience. “We learned new techniques to protect ourselves and the community, enhancing our tactical knowledge and building on our experience,” she said.
Their extraordinary teamwork and skill earned them national recognition as one of South Africa’s top-performing units.
In her closing remarks, Warrant Officer Zikalala extended heartfelt thanks to the SAPS management at all levels for their steadfast support. “We truly appreciate all the support during the build-up to the event and the encouragement on the day,” she said.
Addressing the Newcastle community, she added, “Residents can be assured that they will be safe when we carry out our duties. We are committed to upholding the high standards of the South African Police Service and combating crime to protect our communities.”
To celebrate their victory and strengthen their camaraderie, the Red Mambas hosted a celebratory event at Blue Ridge Crystal on 5 December 2024. This gathering marked the culmination of their success while preparing them for the festive season and the challenges ahead in the coming year.
