After enduring days of intense heat, there’s finally a glimmer of hope for rainfall. However, this relief comes with a warning, as the South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a Level 2 Warning for Severe Thunderstorms.
According to SAWS, isolated to scattered rainfall and thunderstorms are expected over the western parts of KwaZulu-Natal, spreading to the northern regions on Tuesday, 3 December 2024.
Some of these storms are anticipated to escalate into severe conditions, bringing damaging winds, excessive lightning, hail, and heavy downpours that could lead to localised flooding.
Potential Impacts:
The adverse weather conditions may result in:
- Localised damage to livestock, vehicles, and infrastructure.
- Increased risk of injuries or danger to life from excessive lightning.
- Short-term disruptions to municipal and essential services.
- Localised flooding of roads, bridges, and low-lying areas.

The following towns may experience the impacts of the severe weather:
- Newcastle, Vryheid, Ladysmith, Indaka, Dannhauser
- eDumbe, Utrecht, Dundee, Estcourt, Impendle
- Giants Castle, Mooi River, Msinga, Nkandla
- Nongoma, Nquthu
With the severe weather predicted to start on Tuesday and extend into Wednesday, residents are advised to exercise caution.
