According to the weather service, the severe weather could cause damage to infrastructure, settlements, vehicles, and livestock.

Furthermore, SAWS has warned of the potential for short-term disruptions to municipal and other essential services. The danger extends to injuries or fatalities due to lightning, with the possibility of localised flooding in vulnerable areas, including roads, low-lying regions, and bridges.

The towns expected to be impacted by the severe weather are:

  • Newcastle
  • Vryheid
  • Ladysmith
  • Dundee
  • Dannhauser
  • Vryheid
  • Estcourt
  • Indaka
  • Underberg
  • Mooi River
  • Okhahlamba
  • Richmond
  • Pietermartizburg
  • KwaDukuza

While these severe storms will offer some relief from the sweltering heat, the South African Weather Service has issued urgent warnings for residents.

It is advised that people take caution or avoid travelling on bridges and roads in low-lying areas, as these may be prone to flooding or sinkholes. Outdoor activities should be avoided, as lightning, hail, and flooding pose significant risks to personal safety.

Additionally, SAWS urges people to remain indoors and stay clear of windows. Pets, livestock, and vehicles should be sheltered to protect them from the extreme weather conditions.
