In a gripping, action-packed scene, chaos unfolded during the early hours of Wednesday morning, 23 October 2024. Police officers and security personnel were thrust into a high-speed chase after five men made off with a stolen vehicle.
Newcastle SAPS Spokesperson, Lizzy Arumugam, explained that the incident began around 2:30 am at Hilldrop, when a Toyota Cruiser was stolen from a household.
“The complainant (the owner of the vehicle) was woken by his neighbour, who informed him that his vehicle was being pushed out of their premises,” Arumugam stated.
Following this, the suspects climbed into the stolen vehicle and sped off into the night. Wasting no time, Arumugam explained the car’s owner immediately contacted Cartrack to track his stolen vehicle. He and his neighbour then jumped into action, driving off in pursuit while contacting local security companies and the police for urgent assistance.
With security companies responding immediately, the chase quickly escalated along the N11. The Newcastle SAPS K9 Unit was dispatched to the scene, raising the stakes even higher.
According to a police source, the suspects were determined to escape at all costs, speeding along the N11 towards Volksrust before diverting onto the R34. In a brazen move, the suspects allegedly opened fire on the pursuing officers and security personnel.
Undeterred by the gunfire, the authorities pressed on as the suspects abandoned the vehicle and fled into a nearby field, heading towards Memel. Miraculously, none of the officers or security personnel were harmed in the crossfire.
Although the suspects left the stolen vehicle behind, police and security teams didn’t let up, tracking the men through the fields. Their relentless pursuit paid off when three of the five suspects were captured. The other two, however, remain on the run.
Lizzy Arumugam confirmed the arrest of the three suspects but remained cautious, stating that it was too early to confirm their involvement in other serious crimes. “Investigations into the case are ongoing to establish all the necessary facts, and the police will continue searching for the remaining suspects,” she concluded.
As the hunt for the remaining fugitives continues, residents are encouraged to provide any information that could aid in their capture.
