Gangsterism has been an increasingly problematic issue in Osizweni for several years. Alarmingly, it now appears that this issue is bubbling over into Madadeni, raising serious concerns for residents and local authorities alike, as the threat could also seep into Newcastle itself.

In response to the escalating crisis, law enforcement and the Newcastle Municipality are launching a series of campaigns aimed at combatting this growing menace.

Osizweni SAPS Spokesperson, Captain Sipho Nkosi, has sounded the alarm, confirming that according to information supplied to law enforcement, gangs may soon begin targeting schools in Madadeni, necessitating urgent action to protect the community. “The gangs or groupings are moving into Madadeni as Osizweni SAPS is clamping down on them. However, as they are moving to the Madadeni area, they are targeting schools, school children and people walking in the streets,” he explained.

Captain Nkosi elaborated that while a number of youth-based gangs are migrating to Madadeni to escape the intensified police presence in Osizweni, several gangs remain entrenched in the area, engaged in violent conflicts among themselves. The motives for these attacks are still being investigated, but law enforcement speculates that the gangs are battling for territory and control over drugs, heightening the urgency of the situation.

As the threat of gangs seeping into Madadeni grows, and gang violence in Osizweni remains a pressing issue, Captain Nkosi stressed that law enforcement agencies are now taking decisive action.

Additionally, in a bold move to combat gangsterism and protect the community, the Newcastle Municipality’s Communications Unit has announced that Mayor Cllr Xolani Dube has launched a comprehensive anti-gangsterism campaign.

This initiative comes in response to alarming social media posts suggesting that notorious gangs might begin targeting schools in Madadeni. “This initiative comes on the heels of a tragic incident in which three Osizweni residents were killed, leaving the community reeling,” the Communications Unit explained.

On Tuesday, 8 October 2024, Cllr Dube, together with law enforcement and community leaders, visited affected schools to reinforce the municipality’s commitment to safety and security. According to the Municipality’s Communications Unit, this proactive approach emphasises the Mayor’s determination to protect our most vulnerable members—our children.

Interacting with community members in both Osizweni and Madadeni, Cllr Dube made it abundantly clear that gangsterism will not be tolerated in Newcastle, citing a disturbing rise in reports of such activities within local schools. He pointedly remarked, “Gangsterism is a symptom of deeper social issues. We must address poverty, unemployment, and inequality to create safer communities. Our children deserve nothing less.”

During his school visits, the Mayor outlined several key interventions that will be implemented to tackle the issue of gangsterism head-on:

  • School-Based Anti-Gangsterism Programs: Empowering educators and students to prevent gang recruitment.
  • Enhanced Security Measures: Increasing police presence and patrols in and around schools to deter gang activity.
  • Counselling Services: Providing much-needed support for affected students, helping them cope with the stress and trauma associated with gang violence.
  • Community Engagement: Collaborating with local leaders to tackle the root causes of gangsterism and foster a safer environment.

Digging deeper into the matter, Captain Nkosi revealed that SAPS officials from the Amajuba District have launched high-density operations, with police leaving no stone unturned in their fight against gangsterism. He declared, “Police officials are now everywhere, with the high-density operations focusing on Osizweni, Madadeni, and Newcastle.”

The rationale behind the police’s focus on all three communities, Captain Nkosi explained, is to ensure that gangsterism does not escalate to the point where Newcastle, Madadeni, and Osizweni become overrun by these gangs.

In light of these developments, Captain Nkosi issued a cautionary warning to residents. “If you see any of these groupings or gangs, do not approach them at all. Rather contact the police immediately.”
