Ice-cold weather conditions swept over Newcastle this past weekend with countless people relishing in the snowy conditions. But for one local businessman, the weekend turned into a nightmare, marked by a brutal robbery that shattered the calm.
The harrowing incident occurred on Friday, 20 September 2024, at approximately 2 am along Schoenland Street in the Industrial area.
According to information verified by Newcastle SAPS spokesperson Lizzy Arumugam, the businessman, who resides at his business premises, was asleep with his girlfriend when a man armed with a firearm burst into their room.
As a result, the two Chinese nationals were jolted from their sleep, staring in disbelief at the intruder in their bedroom during the early hours. The suspect demanded that the terrified couple hand over all the money on hand, along with their cellphones.
The situation escalated when the assailant began to beat the businessman repeatedly with the firearm, inflicting both physical and psychological trauma.
After restraining his victim by tying him up, the suspect proceeded to steal four cellphones and an undisclosed sum of money before fleeing the scene.
Currently, no arrests have been made, and the suspect remains at large. Arumugam stated that the Newcastle SAPS is actively investigating the case and is committed to bringing the perpetrator to justice.
