Tami Didiza, Group Manager of Stakeholder Management and Communications at AMSA, shared insightful guidance on the subject.

“With respect to employment in the steel industry, ArcelorMittal South Africa believes that individuals should pursue qualifications that align with the technical and engineering needs of the industry. Specifically, qualifications such as a National Diploma, a BTech, BSc, and BEng in fields such as Chemical, Mechanical, Metallurgical, Electrical, and Industrial Engineering.

Didiza stressed that these qualifications are in high demand within the steel industry and play a pivotal role in filling key positions. By acquiring these credentials, individuals position themselves for critical roles that drive both innovation and sustainability within the sector.

Moreover, Didiza highlighted the importance of a strong foundation in mathematics and science for students aspiring to achieve occupational qualifications, such as a Red Seal Certificate. “These particular subjects are crucial, as they provide the necessary analytical and problem-solving skills required in the industry,” he highlighted.

Delving further, Didiza emphasised the immense value placed on these qualifications within the steel industry.

“Professionals with these qualifications are well-equipped to handle the complex challenges of the industry, making them highly desirable to employers. Importantly, these qualifications are crucial for roles that involve innovation, efficiency and sustainability, all of which are key focus areas for the future of the steel industry,” he explained.

These qualifications not only equip individuals with technical skills but also empower them with specialised knowledge essential for excelling in the modern steel industry. The expertise gained through these programmes enables professionals to navigate complex challenges, contribute innovative ideas, and play a key role in the company’s growth and success.

Beyond offering a secure career path, Didiza pointed out that these qualifications open doors for further advancement within the company and the broader industry. “Professionals with these credentials are highly sought after, making them more competitive in the job market,” said Didiza, offering insight for those looking to carve out a bright future.

However, the benefits of these qualifications extend far beyond individual success.

Didiza noted that these credentials also play a fundamental role in strengthening the economy“These qualifications benefit the economy in several ways. By equipping individuals with the necessary skills and knowledge, they contribute to a more skilled and capable workforce. This, in turn, leads to increased productivity and efficiency within the industry. As individuals excel in their roles and contribute to the growth of the company, it positively impacts the overall economic performance of the region,” said Didiza.

He further explained that a well-educated and skilled workforce attracts investment and fosters innovation, both of which are vital for economic development. “Companies are more likely to invest in regions with a strong talent pool, leading to job creation and economic growth. Additionally, the steel industry plays a vital role in various sectors, including construction, manufacturing and infrastructure development. By having qualified professionals in the industry, it ensures the sustainability and competitiveness of these sectors, further driving economic growth,” elaborated Didiza.

Given the undeniable importance of these qualifications for both the steel industry and the broader economy, an imperative question arises: does AMSA offer bursaries and internships for individuals who may not be able to afford tertiary education?

“The company provides these opportunities, particularly in mathematics and science, to ensure that individuals have the chance to gain practical experience and further develop their skills. By offering bursaries and internships, ArcelorMittal South Africa aims to support the education and career growth of aspiring professionals, helping them to excel in the steel industry and contribute effectively to the company’s success,” Didiza noted.

  1. The problem is, we have highly qualified
artisan’s, but are unable to find employment.
And once our apprentices are qualified, no one gives them opportunities to get experience.
So they leave the country. Working away from home leaving families behind or immergrating.

      1. The issue is that it is a basic principal that YOU should do the contcting. If you wait for potensial employers to contact YOU, you will probably remain unemployed. Do something yourself!

  2. Unfortunately Amsa as a Titan in the business cannot provide any positions to people as they are already in retrenchment processes. It’s so unstable that even suppliers that do work for Amda is not assured of work anymore.

  3. AMSA is telling half truths and whole lies, they have their own employees on short time.

Besides there people with a standard 8 qualification that can do a better job than those qualified engineers, managers etc that have little to no practical experience and low EQ.
