Two lives lost, 79 injured in school bus crash near Vryheid

Investigations are underway following a devastating scene which unfolded on Monday afternoon, 2 September 2024, after a bus transporting school children overturned on R618 Kwa Vilakazi, near Vryheid.

Road Angels South Africa explained that it received a call regarding a bus accident shortly after 3 pm, and immediately contacted all emergency services to attend.

KwaZulu Private Ambulance’s Craig Botha revealed that their team was dispatched after receiving reports of a serious collision. Upon arrival, the emergency personnel were met with a harrowing sight: a bus had lost control and overturned, leading to a chaotic scene.

“Paramedics quickly assessed the situation and discovered that eight patients had sustained critical injuries, nine patients had serious injuries, and 62 patients had minor injuries,” Botha reported. The team worked as fast as possible to stabilise the injured on-site before transporting them to various medical facilities for further treatment.

Adding to this, Road Angels South Africa noted that one of the critically injured children had their leg amputated due to the extent of their injuries.

Tragically, Botha confirmed that two occupants had suffered fatal injuries and passed away before emergency services could reach them.
