A truck overturned on the N11 between the Durnacol turn-off and R68 turn-off on Monday afternoon, 26 August 2024, coming to a stop along the roadside.
Road Angels South Africa noted that the cause of the crash remains unclear at this time. However, the situation spiralled out of control as masses of people gathered at the scene with the sole intent of ransacking the overturned truck.
Charles Steyn of Magenta Emergency Medical Service reported that, fortunately, no injuries were sustained in the crash. However, he expressed serious concerns over the safety risks posed by looters. “People looting from scenes such as this pose a safety risk for themselves and for emergency personnel on the scene. There is also the criminal aspect, which people need to remember, as it could land them in serious trouble.”
As looters tore through the truck’s contents, emergency personnel were forced to work under challenging conditions to clear the scene. In light of the chaotic events, Road Angels South Africa has issued a warning to motorists travelling on the N11, urging them to be cautious of the increased pedestrian traffic due to the looting.
Furthermore, it is deeply troubling that the looting of vehicles involved in accidents continues in South Africa and almost appears to be a normal process. With the above in mind, what are your thoughts and do you feel there is a solution for this form of criminal activity?

Thieves have a new name ‘looters’. This is common theft….same as shoplifting….however they believe it’s their right too loot….they are classed as thieves…shows you they don’t see the crime they committing….believe it’s gifts from the ancestors….absolutely disgusting behavior…..
I drove past this accident today, sad thing is… traffic officials watch people loot.
Rule of law is free for all…
