Road safety has become a pressing issue following two collisions within just 12 hours, one of which resulted in three people being injured.
The first incident occurred along the R34 near Utrecht shortly after 7 pm on Thursday night, 22 August 2024.
According to an official at the scene, the driver was navigating the road when they encountered newly installed speed humps near Uitkomst Colliery.
“It is speculated that the motorist was unaware of the recently erected speed bumps and may have braked too late and too hard, causing the vehicle to crash off the road,” the source explained, who further pointed out that thankfully, no injuries were reported in this incident.
However, on Friday morning, 23 August 2024, a collision between a truck and a bakkie near Vryheid, left three people injured. The accident occurred on the R34, Melmoth Road, prompting an immediate response from emergency services.
Craig Botha, Spokesperson for KwaZulu Private Ambulance, reported that paramedics were dispatched after receiving news of the collision. Upon arrival, they found two individuals with severe injuries and a third with minor injuries. “The patients were treated on the scene before being transported to hospital for further care,” Botha stated.
In light of these incidents, Road Angels South Africa is urging motorists to exercise caution. “Adjust your speed accordingly and slow down when driving in unfamiliar areas, especially after nightfall,” the organisation advised.
As the weekend approaches, drivers are reminded to adhere to traffic laws to ensure a safe and pleasant weekend for everyone.
