SAPS excellence awards: Celebrating heroes in law enforcement

Police officials tirelessly commit themselves to the protection of their communities, frequently putting their safety on the line to uphold the law and apprehend offenders. Despite their often unheralded efforts, a grand event was recently organised to celebrate the dedication of those who serve as the first line of defence in safeguarding the residents of the Amajuba District.

This occasion marked the inaugural SAPS Excellence Awards for the Amajuba District, hosted by the South African Police Service (SAPS) on Thursday, 16 August 2024, at the elegant Blue Ridge Crystal.

Eleven police stations from across the district, such as Newcastle, Osizweni, Madadeni, Utrecht, Hattingspruit, and Dannhauser, gathered for an evening filled with spirited competition. Officers from each station competed for top honours, striving to bring pride to their respective communities.

During the event, Newcastle SAPS Station Commander Brigadier Vassie Naidoo highlighted that the awards were established to recognise the unwavering dedication of local law enforcement. He emphasised that the ceremony also served as a source of inspiration for other officers to strive for excellence in their duties.

Amajuba District Mayor, Councillor Ndabuko Zulu, expressed his heartfelt gratitude, stating, “We are here for the dedicated selfless work of our police officers, and to extend our deepest thanks for your commitment to serving the Amajuba District Community. We understand the difficult and risky path you tread in your careers, often working with limited resources and facing the impatience of the public. Yet, we want to thank you all for the vital work you do for the Amajuba District.”

Moreover, Amajuba District Commissioner Major General Fred Alexander added, “As the District Commissioner, I am deeply honoured to host the first-ever excellence awards in the Amajuba District, recognising and celebrating the officers who tirelessly ensure the safety of our residents.”

The inaugural SAPS Excellence Awards saw a remarkable turnout, with police officials gathering in large numbers alongside representatives from the Newcastle Community Policing Forum (CPF), the Newcastle Community Crime Prevention Association (CCPA), and local security companies. The evening was charged with excitement, camaraderie, and a spirit of celebration.

Among the notable winners of the evening, the Hattingspruit Police Station proudly clinched the prestigious title of Station of the Year. The Newcastle SAPS Human Resources Management team was celebrated as the Administration Team of the Year. At the same time, Captain N van der Nest and SAC GL Nxumalo received accolades for their outstanding work in Administration.

Newcastle’s Lieutenant Colonel NL Dlamini earned the award for Vispol and Operations Employee of the Year for Levels 8 to 13.

Dannhauser SAPS took second runner-up in the Vispol and Operations Team of the Year category, with Newcastle’s Vispol Stabilisation and Tracing Team securing first runner-up. The coveted first place in the Vispol and Operations Team of the Year category was triumphantly claimed by Newcastle’s Highway Patrol.

As the evening progressed, police officers from various stations were recognised for their tireless efforts in keeping their communities safe. Additionally, local security companies, as well as the CPF and CCPA, were acknowledged for their invaluable support in assisting the SAPS to uphold law and order.

With the achievements of local law enforcement being celebrated in such a grand fashion, Brigadier Naidoo expressed his hope that the awards ceremony would serve as a beacon of inspiration for other officers, motivating them to excel in their work and continue creating safer communities.

  1. The public is not fooled by these so called “awards” , there is no excellence to be seen in practical terms.

Criminals that these recipients arrested are released within a day due to lack of evidence or bungled investigations. What does it mean ? This is just a circle of comrades patting each other on the Back to boost their CV’s.

    Crime is rampant.
