Honouring a Newcastle hero: A farewell to Newcastle’s Warrant Officer Stanley Holloway

For many, Warrant Officer Stanley Holloway was more than just a police officer. He was a father, brother, son, friend, colleague, and a cornerstone of the community.

Throughout his career with the Newcastle Search and Rescue Unit, Warrant Officer Holloway demonstrated unparalleled bravery, facing daunting and terrifying situations to rescue those in peril.

Whether descending steep cliffs or diving into tumultuous rivers and dams, Holloway never hesitated to confront the dangers that others would avoid.

Tragically, Warrant Officer Holloway passed away on Tuesday, 18 June 2024, leaving a significant void in both the Newcastle law enforcement community and the wider public. His loss is a poignant reminder of how deeply he impacted the lives he touched.

A heartfelt memorial service was held for Warrant Officer Holloway on Wednesday, 26 June 2024, at Grace Community Church. Members of the SAPS, paramedics from various emergency medical services, the Newcastle Municipal Protection Services, the Newcastle Community Policing Forum, and officials from different security companies came together with his family and community members to honour a man who gave so selflessly to Newcastle.

As tributes poured in, it became evident that Warrant Officer Holloway’s legacy would endure.

His unwavering commitment to his duty, combined with his compassion and kindness, left an indelible mark on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. Stories of his heroic rescues, his mentorship of younger officers, and his involvement in community initiatives highlighted the remarkable breadth of his influence.

Captain Martinus de Waal of the Newcastle K9 Unit spoke movingly about Holloway’s willingness to go the extra mile for others. “Stanley was incredibly passionate about his job and wore the SAPS badge with immense pride. He was unique in his role within the Amajuba District and even beyond, assisting in Durban during floods.”

Reflecting on Stanley’s career in the Search and Rescue Unit, Captain de Waal tearfully addressed the mourners, highlighting how Stanley often ventured into situations with uncertain outcomes. Despite the risks, he bravely faced each challenge to save those in danger and bring peace to their families.

Furthermore, Stanley’s sister, Charlene Holloway, described her brother as a true people person. She highlighted his loving nature and dedication to his career, his family, and his friends. He was always eager to help others, embodying the very essence of selflessness and compassion.

“I want people to remember the man my brother was, the lives he saved, and how he was always there for everyone.”

Journalists in Newcastle have witnessed firsthand Stanley’s unrivalled dedication. During the floods in 2023, he bravely assisted people out of their cars as vehicles were washed away at Amcor Dam. In numerous other incidents, he fearlessly dived into uncertain waters to locate missing persons, showcasing his relentless commitment to saving lives.

As the law enforcement and emergency sectors grieve alongside Stanley’s family, Newcastillian News extends its deepest condolences, remembering his sacrifices, dedication, and long standing friendship. Stanley Holloway’s legacy will live on in the hearts of those he touched.
