According to police reports, the horrific ordeal unfolded on Saturday night, 1 June 2024, when a police vehicle and a white Jetta were involved in a head-on collision at approximately 10 pm.

While the exact details surrounding the collision remain unclear, an official police source noted that the police vehicle, driven by an off-duty officer from the Harrismith Public Order Police (POP) Unit, was travelling along the road when it collided with the Jetta. Tragically, the driver of the Jetta died at the scene.

The police officer and his four passengers sustained injuries and were rushed to hospital immediately following the collision. As emergency personnel attended the scene, Newcastle Municipality firefighters were called to assist in clearing the area. Charles Steyn of Magenta Emergency Medical Service explained that the situation took an even grimmer turn when a suspected drunk driver crashed through the scene shortly before 2 am on Sunday, 2 June 2024, causing further injuries.

Furthermore, an official police source elaborated on the matter, stating that at approximately 1:40 am on Sunday, 2 June 2024, Protection Services (firefighters), POP members, and tow truckers were still clearing the scene when a white VW Polo Vivo came speeding down the road, colliding with three of the emergency services vehicles parked at the site.
