Emergency services were kept busy on Thursday, 25 April 2024, following two collisions along Impala Drive, Newcastle.

According to Charles Steyn of Magenta Emergency Medical Services, the first incident occurred shortly after 7 am at the intersection of Drakensberg Drive and Impala Drive.

He explained that a woman was travelling along Drakensberg Drive, taking her young son to school, when the driver of a Nissan bakkie allegedly ran a red traffic light and collided with her vehicle.
As a result, both the woman and her son were trapped in the vehicle, prompting paramedics to force open the doors to free them. Thankfully, neither sustained injuries, although Steyn noted that the child, approximately seven years old, was treated for shock.
However, the driver of the Nissan bakkie fled the scene after the collision. Steyn highlighted the poor condition of the vehicle, indicating it was not roadworthy. Whether the vehicle was licensed and registered to the driver remains under investigation.
The second incident occurred at the intersection of Victoria Road and Impala Drive, shortly after 2 pm.

While the circumstances surrounding the collision are still to be established, an eyewitness described being outside their employer’s yard when it unfolded. He noted, “I just saw the red car (a Hyundai Grand i10) driving up Victoria Road and the Jeep crashing into the car.”
A young baby was in the car at the time. Fortunately, both the baby and the other occupants of both vehicles escaped uninjured.
As law enforcement will look into both incidents, Steyn said, “People should consider the weather conditions as we enter winter, the misty season. Motorists also need to adhere to traffic regulations and stop at red traffic lights.”

People ignore stop signs and red traffic lights. Our traffic officers are a no show at these high ridk areas. Will rather sit and targer easy pray at the area around Metal Ores Technologies leading into the industrial area. There are trees with shade.
No surprise.. Have you seen the way people are driving lately in Newcastle it’s a safety risk every day. They turn right first at a traffic light, they stop as they please, change lanes without signaling. Speed as fast as they can, Even police officers talking on phones while driving.. Best part is there are no traffic officials in sight, they only frequent certain communities and areas where they can get bribes. They avoid the Taxi rank and Kirkland street.. Someone needs to intervene with the head of Traffic Department because he or she definitely needs to be fired
