Navigating the R34, commonly known as the Memel Road, has been a longstanding concern among motorists due to the main road’s poor conditions.

However, there’s a newfound sense of hope as significant improvements are underway.
Since taking on the daunting task of restoring the R34, SANRAL’s Eastern Region Project Engineer, Nokuthula Mazibuko told Newcastillian News that SANRAL had made extensive progress in ensuring the majority of the road was safer. This, according to Mazibuko, had been achieved by filling potholes and completing work on other safety aspects, such as drainage improvements, tree cutting and guardrail repairs.
“These temporary make safe measures will be replaced with repair measures which should hold until such a time a project is put in place that will provide a long-term improved road condition is procured by SANRAL,” said Mazibuko.
However, she explained that there is still a lot of maintenance work to be completed, all aimed at reducing further road deterioration. “Works such as pavement layer repairs, rut filling, shoulder repairs, road marking are amongst the many activities to be still done in the duration of this contract,” explained Mazibuko.
While SANRAL works extensively on the road, Mazibuko noted that the project was not without its challenges.
She explained there have been community disruptions since the repair work was initiated. While unable to divulge on this, Mazibuko stressed that SANRAL was resolving the issue to prevent any delays in the project.
Furthermore, the completion of the repair work is anticipated within the next 11 months, barring any unforeseen hindrances. In the meantime, Mazibuko called on motorists to adhere to the traffic laws, as any negligent driving would impact motorists and their passengers. “Please drive with caution and within the speed limit, as there are teams working on the road to improve the condition and ensure there are no potholes,” stated Mazibuko.
With extensive work already being done, Newcastillian News reported in February 2024 how the South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL) had officially taken over the road and was embarking on extensive repair work.

The road is hugely improved. We are very thankful. The only remaining problem is the cattle roaming freely next to and on the road. This is a significant safety hazard.
